Instead of selling and losing thousands, why not buy a locker and getting a new third member that's been set up properly?

It would cost less and you get upgrayyyyded parts.

Yes, there is one TSB written exclusively for rear howling, but that doesn't mean that the dealer won't try other means to solve the problem. The leaf springs show up on both the squeaky and howl TSBs, so they are somewhat interrelated. I worked with my service advisor and service manager to figure out how we were going to approach all 5 TSBs that were applicable to my truck: rear diff howl, front howl, squeaky springs, transmission surging, and trip reset. I didn't want to remove my rear seats to 'check' if the bushings were bad, and since the springs were on both TSBs, we did just the pads, which solved my rear howling issue. I don't know if there's an actual TSB for the axle or rear diff, but there is this driveline vibration one.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/oh-no-tsb-0171-16-driveline-vibration.463992/

The point of all of this is to show there are multiple solutions to this problem, and if one can eliminate these from the equation, the service department can look at the diff and axle as the culprit, not the TSBs.

My dealer told me they can't do anything without corporates approval. The service department is clueless on how to approach it.

Therefore everything that has/will happen is dependent on the case manager and/or local service manager getting in touch with the regional service guy who then gets back to the local service guy. It's taking like two gd weeks to get every single messsge to where it needs to go and back.

I'm starting to think my dealer is simply not doing all they could be doing. That is, it sounds like they could be more proactive than they are in exploring options. Thanks guys for all your advice.

Ha, Ha! I knew that would get under someones skin. No I doubt I buy another truck unless I find a bank bag full of money along the road. I'm looking at going back to the Toyota camp and trading for a CHR. Hope they put a moon roof in them before I trade in a couple years.

I lost just over $3,000 when I traded my 2016 SR5 Access cab 2WD in after owning it a little over 2 years. I thought I made out like a bandit.

I think it's time to go to another dealer and let them give you an answer. Go for a test drive with them and see if they have a solution.
Many others here have had to go to another dealership to get things fixed right! Sad but that's the way it is... you have good dealerships and some that have no clue!

Man, I’d love to have a dealer that tries but the ones I have used won’t do anything without corporate. And corporate says the howl is normal. Hell, an Toyota FTS flew out and drove mine for the rear howl, confirmed it, and Toyota and the dealer said can’t help ya.lol

I’ve been dealing with this issue for 9 months. Countless phone calls and emails to both corporate and Lentz’s office. I think I have been to the dealer 6-7 times. They won’t budge due to the howl being normal on the SR5. I guess that’s their way of getting out of attempting to fix it.

Also, there are no bushings under the back seat. Just look under the truck behind the rear doors and they are right there (cab mounts). Remove the nut, and the damper, and tighten back up.

At this point I can hope my leaves start to squeak and push for new ones ha But I just spent a week or so on the dustiest roads possible and they are still silent. Lol

Most quality springs will have some type of disc at the end of each leaf to help with friction. However, I am not sure what the difference is between the "old" springs and "updated" springs. I will check mine here in a little bit and see. They did not replace my springs as they said it didnt qualify for the TSB, but they did replace the body mounts even though they said it had the TSB mounts from day one.

Man, this is not good to see.

Yeah, it has been a bit annoying to say the least. I haven’t given up yet though. The weather has cooled down the last few weeks and I have been driving more with the windows up. The howl is definitely still there. I think the range has grown over summer, too. Sucks.

I am in the same boat unfortunately. Replaced body mounts and rear diff, still have a howl/whine. Dealer tried giving me the "normal trait" bs, but Toyota wants me to go back to them. Have to call the service manager today.

Man, this isn't sounding good. $38k. This crap should be illegal, coming from a company like Toyota.

Dude I would get rid of it and take my losses. I had a 2015 Colorado that I lost sleep over and thought about during the day when I was not sleeping. Finally got tired of GM's bs and traded for the Tacoma.

So, at this point, what is more important; losing some money or losing your mind? Just eat the loss and get something that makes you smile every time you get behind the wheel.

Go in to the dealer and pull up the Tacoma site. Call them on their bullshit. Again.

THERE IS NO FIX IN OEM! It's the gear cut borderline helical with a straight taper. The only fix is aftermarket gear set is the only solution.

Sell it to Carmax I doubt they even drive it over 35...and unless they are a Tacoma forum junkie I would bet most other private party buyers would notice. It’s annoying but probably not doing any damage. Sell it to the dealer they won’t drive it far either if at all.

I confirmed that my rear springs have the round pads as well and were not on the list to be replaced by the TSB.

Also, if you trade or sell the Taco, what are you looking at next? 4runner or outside of the Toyota lineup?
