I started looking into oil catch cans. So far from what I've read, they are pretty simple yet effective in pulling out moisture and other nasties from the PCV system. Anyone running them and what has been your experience? I've found some "decent" ones on Amazon for about $30 or so.....

There is a large group of catch can users on this forum. Do they do what they claim? Yes. Are they necessary? IMO no. There are gazillions of vehicles out there NOT running catch cans. I actually found it a bit humorous that people were using these on daily drivers. Usually something found on a race inspired vehicle.

Maybe not necessary but for the very small investment, it "could" provide a small measure of longevity. I'm still sitting on the fence with this...

OP, I have one on my 2013 Tacoma and one on my 2017 4Runner.
I have cleaned some real nasty stuff out of both of them every 5000 miles.

PS: I am using the same one in your Picture. very easy to mount and clean.

I saw one YT video that said they can be a problem when it's really cold out. Condensation in the can can freeze blocking the system and over pressuring the engine/EGR system, potentially blowing seals.
Don't know if it's a real potential issue, just saw it, I think on Scotty Kilmer Garage??

You'll want to put an O-Ring on the dipstick or it won't seal correctly.

Anyone running one in very cold climates? Here the temps can dip frequently well below zero. I don't want to solve a problem and create a larger one...

Scotty doesn't know his head from his ass most of the time.

I dunno about this claim.... But he's normally an idiot. The type who overruns their don't know with loud words.

They are mostly used if your engine is a direct injector type due to the fact that no gas (which is a cleaning agent) passes through the intake valve and after about 30K it gets carboned up on the stem.

The catch can filters out a lot of the stuff that causes this.

Scotty has a good video explaining it. He puts some knowledgeable stuff out of his ass sometimes.

I run one only because I have a SC and I didn't like the thought of all the crap my catch can catches being pumped back into my charger. It's the nastiest burnt oil gas goop sludge that it filters out. I wasn't a believer until I emptied it for the first time.

really only necessary for boosted applications. Personally i like the slight oil mist that is introduced into the intake track. It keeps lower intake valve stems lubed. But to each their own.

My main concern is running a catch can in the winter months. I read through the 50 pages on another catch can thread and there were some pics posted of frozen crud from the catch can.

I’ve had one on all of my vehicles. Had them on my DD 1st gen 4Runner, 100 series, 80 series, Cobras and my Tacoma. I agree with the above statement that millions of cars don’t have them and have lasted a long time. I think that it may add a little longevity to my vehicles and I think they are kinda cool. I don’t have to worry about them freezing over in Sacramento so I’ll keep running them until there is evidence that they do more harm then help.

The sludge sits at the bottom of the can. The inlet and outlet hoses are at the top.

Unless you’re letting the can fill to the brim, I don’t see it being an issue.

It also seems the oil mist provides a bit of upper cylinder/ring lubrication. No, I'm not an engineer, but it seems pretty obvious.

Playing Devil's advocate..... If that is a consideration of engineers (upper cylinder lubrication), why would a lubricant that is mixed with water and other nasties be acceptable as a lubricant?.....

I wouldn't lubricate a door hinge with oil mixed with water.....

(I don't want anyone's knickers to get in a twist. I'm just putting this out there to noodle.)
