They wouldn't be hiding it every time they park. IE: the clicker would be in the center console and they would just open the center console, hit the button then close the lid. I think you are taking my "on the visor" comment a bit too literally.

in fairness, this isn't THAT much cheaper than a $150 homelink mirror and its a decent amount of work (You can reduce the workload and buy a prewired one,but you end up closer in cost in a hurry, especially if you need more than one button)

Becareful with Homelink, some of the newer garage doors don't work with the original Homelink, you need Homelink 2, or what ever they are calling it. I have an older version I bought of eBay and installed in my headliner. Worked great until my garage door died and I had to buy a new one. I even tried the adapter for the garage door to make it work, it didn't.

Luckily it works for the gates into my community. I do hide my garage door opener as I park in the driveway most of the time.

All I was trying to do was give someone some ideas why they might get a homelink. For some reason in the US they don't offer the homelink in the TRD models. In Canada the homelink mirrors come standard.

unless you have to park outside but still use the garage for entry. the homelink mirrors don't work unless the truck is turned on (or ACC on), so there isn't the concern of the vehicle getting broken into in the driveway and then the remote being used to break into the garage. at my previous house, my truck got broken into and they took the remote to use at a later date. i had to wipe the codes from the actual opener. i got lucky that they didn't break into the garage the night that they stole it. i suspect someone or something scared them.

Don't know who or what bobsmirrors are but adding a Gentek GENK40A (autodimming homelink) or GENK80A (newer frameless autodimming homelink) mirror is pretty simple. Constant power, switched power, ground. Done. I put a GENK40A in my wife's '12 RAV4 years ago. Swapped the stock GENK40A in my funcar with the frameless GENK80A a couple months ago.

It's pretty easy to find inexpensive GENK40A or GENK45A take-offs from other vehicles for a reasonable price. Need to do a little research usually as the sellers often don't know to name it as such. (hint: I have a GENK40A sitting on a shelf)

It's available in SouthEast Toyota territory as a port-install option. Or at least it was in Sept 2017 when I ordered my TRDOR with the GENK85A (frameless/homelink/autodim/compass) -- cost less than I could buy it afterwards. Plus it then fell under the 3/36k warranty.

I had the opposite problem. Bob's new mirror didn't work with one of my Lift master 8500s that was 5 years old. A $15 wireless bridge from liftmaster solved the issue. The bridge installs next to the opener and translates the signals.

I'm so confused why so many of you are worried about break ins, really? If you have a remote clipped to the visor why don't you park in the garage you are opening, unless of course you have filled it with junk not worth a quarter as much as your brand new truck. If you can't because you are a multi car family, save yourself $110 and go buy a keychain remote the size of a key fob and attach it to your keys. Lowe's and HD have them for around $40

My garage isn't long enough on one side to fit anything besides a coupe. And why would I want to carry a garage remote attached to my keys all day? That just adds to the bulk of things in my pocket. This solution of the homelink mirror obviously isn't for you. Repeat after me... "Not everyone's needs/wants are the same as mine"

Is it the same or just similar? Same color compass and backlighting in buttons? Same homelink version?

Hmm... not sure why you're concerned with how others choose to spend their money, but whatever.

I'm curious though, how exactly would I attach a keychain remote to my truck key? No attachment points, and since my truck key lives inside my wallet the remote would be pretty lumpy and tough to reach as I pull into the driveway. :)

Is this true for all Homelink? I specifically didn't link my garage because it thought with the truck not on, it would still open the garage.

Depends on how it's wired. The Homelink function can be wired to switched power or constant power. The mirror that came in my Mazda was wired constant on. The port-install mirror in my Tacoma is wired to switched power. Easy enough to switch if you get one that's wired differently from how you want it.

Sorry about reviving this old post. I’ve been searching for a way disable homelink when I park outside. My 2017 Canadian Tacoma OR has the Homelink mirror as standard equipment but it appears to work at all times (engine off, smart key not near by, alarm on or off). No mention of this in manual. Sort of renders the feature useless if parked outside occasionally.
