Is it a "hit or miss" proposition whether your truck comes with painted rear bumper covers?

My '18 TRD OR DCSB came with chrome covers, but it was manufactured towards the end of the model year run, and I'm wondering if it was a situation where the factory was just throwing on whatever was most easily available from the parts bin.

My painted covers are coming today via UPS, and it just got me thinking.

I've seen SR's with painted rear bumper covers, so it's apparently not an up-model thing.

    Any thoughts?

SR has Black Covers, Off Road comes Standard with Chrome but if you add Premium and Tech they are painted body color, Sport is body color. Not sure about Limited or SR5.

SR5's are chrome. They look great on mine.

My Off Road has chrome bumper covers. I continue to debate whether to swap them for body colored bumper covers. My wife wants me to keep the chrome bumper covers, but I prefer body colored bumper covers.

I think chrome bumpers look really out of place. I think most of the 18s and I'm sure the 19s have the tech package as I'm certain most buyer's now a days don't want chrome. When I was searching, it was rare to find them without the tech package.

I think black would look great on qs. Just my opinion.

Is this even possible, to swap chrome for the OEM painted?

You get the black ones and have them painted. Or I've seen some paint them on their own. Not sure how closely you could match that way however.

Chrome is crap on the Quicksand. I ditched mine ASAP. I purchased the black plastic ones online and sold my chrome ones here.

I like the chrome covers on my OR (and I don't even like chrome, generally). I like it better than paint-matched or black. Just personal preference. It'd be even better if it were metal and showed some surface rust over time. :D

Arent they just ABS plastic trim over a substructure that is technically the bumper?

How do they attach? Tabs that snap into place?

New caps were 160 for the pair or so everywhere I looked. I paid about that I think for some random dealer online who was running free shipping at the time. The removal took some...finesse. There is a small metal alligator clip which is a particularly big pain in the butt.

I agree the chrome stands out. I see plenty of Off Roads with chrome bumpers here in eastern NC.

Yes, if someone is willing to sell their OEM bumper covers.

Chrome hides scratches better than painted. I think....man it has been a long time since I drove a vehicle with Chrome bumpers. Wow, I never realized that. I guess I am in the no chrome camp.

Perhaps my personal solution for managing the chrome bumper covers is to buy a chrome TRD exhaust tip.

I took the shiny chrome TRD exhaust tip off and went with the black one, but my truck does not have the chrome rear bumper either.

Yes. Just some tabs and a small metal clip.
