7FFDD1D6-C431-4F52-B190-0A4DDBECF9A6.jpg Hey guys, so I was watching a video yesterday on how to turbo a car and it looks pretty straight forward if you buy a complete kit. I’ve never turboed a vechicle before so I was wondering what all would I need if I wanted to turbo my Tacoma? I found this kit https://www.cxracing.com/turbo-kit/...lexus-truck-hilux-tacoma/TRB-KIT-5VZFE-IC-KIT but I was wondering what else I would need? Injectors? New fuel pump? Ecu? All help would be appreciated!

Turbocharging/Supercharging a vehicle is never straight forward. Installing the mechanical components isn't too bad, but you need to know what you are doing in order to tune it properly and not blow a head gasket (or worse) in the process. I highly recommend you find a friend with experience tuning a forced induction vehicle. Either that or be prepared to spend a fairly substantial amount of money to have somebody help you out.

I don't intend for this to discourage you, it's fantastic that you want to turbo your truck. Just keep in mind that a lot more work goes into doing it correctly than is initially apparent.

I was researching it back when. Supercharging is simpler than turbocharging. I don't think anyone makes a kit to turbocharge your rig so it would be custom $$$. complicated.
If you stay under a certain manifold pressure you can run a supercharger stock but its not going to get you the degree of power you may be looking for.

If you're fairly mechanically inclined, the installation of the mechanical working parts isn't too bad. The hard part will be getting your old manifolds off depending out how rusty your stuff is. Where some have trouble is planning out your tuning depending on how much boost you want to run. Also, running vac/boost lines can also be troublesome for people that are inexperienced with boosted motors. Once you get it up and running, you're usually trouble shooting things the first few times you drive it...tracking down leaks (oil, exhaust, vac). And just making sure everything is functioning properly.

$3,000 and about 100 hours, including research, is what it took me. I didn't know the first thing about turbo's entering the project. I would do it again.

Used the CX kit with a FIC 6 and larger primary fuel injectors. The kit was way better, IMO obviously, than it's reputation on this forum. My only recommendation would be to use a much smaller turbo than the one provided in the kit.

As @boostedka mentioned, the ex manifolds are the kind of shit you spend an eternity dealing with in car hell if you don't lead a virtuous life. I would come with several different sizes and shapes of wrenches to get those off, oh yeah and putting the new turbo manifolds on is even harder.

Check out the Turbo BS thread in the performance forum. The people that frequent that forum are more that likely the most educated people on the internet in terms of turbo charged Tacomas.

@Clay_916 hows was the tuning part of it? Did you tune it yourself or did you take it to someone?

Did the tuning myself and included that time in my 100 hour estimate. Didn't know the first thing about tuning going in, either. It was the most rewarding part of the whole project IMO. The FIC 6 can adjust in real time so you have instant feedback. For me it was the "coming together" event of the project, essentially the moment when I got to experience the results of all that time spend installing the kit. It was also nice to work from a chair :D.

How much difference do you see in gas mileage with the turbo?

Depends how you drive, with my aftermarket computer I cruise on the highway at 16-17mpg just like before on my 35" tires. Around town I can get 13-15 if I'm soft on the pedal and as bad as 8 if I'm racing around having fun from every stop light
