Before people say it's rail dust it is not. Nor is it specs of rust. IronX, clay, polish and other detailing products will get this out without hurting the paint. A deep cut polish will get it out, but at that point there might not be any protective clear left. (Someone with 30 years of detailing experience voiced that concern). Also mentioned that polishing the textured part will def eat through the clear no matter how careful he is.

    Here's the run down.

I purchased a brand new Taco. It was dripping with tire dressing, I forgot to tell them I do NOT want tire shine. It was getting late, I was working the deal all day. Anyways, the tire shine splatted everywhere, but I didn't have time to wash it. A few days later I washed the truck and noticed brown spots on the paint. Mostly on the right side. I brought the truck to detailers thinking I may have ran something over and they said it's in the paint and it wont come out with a buff or any chemicals. So they ruled out it was oil, tar, or anything caused by natural elements.

So, with that said I brought it back to the dealership and showed it to them. I asked for a different vehicle because no one should have to settle with an issue like this. They declined and claimed this is a manufacture defect. As I am talking to the manager he walks away and sends his assistant manager to talk with me. I filed a compliant with Toyota Care on this behavior. Come Monday his assistant manager gets defensive and said, you filed a complaint against my manager and that wasn't right. All I did was state facts and the service team was there to witness it.

I return for additional pictures of the issue. The service adviser sends pictures to Toyota for review.

5-6 days pass and I have not heard anything from the dealership. I follow-up with Toyota customer care and they told me the dealership said that I didn't show up for an inspection? No one reached out to me after the pictures. At this point the dealership made me look like a lair.

Few days pass and the service manager reaches out to schedule an appointment for a Toyota engineer to review the vehicle in person. While this happening service director and service manager are hoovering around my truck, looking at it while I am standing there and do not have the courtesy to speak with me or introduce themselves?

The engineer authorized repair of the vehicle but involves a very invasive process of removing body panels, interior panels, etc which will constitute repainting 70% of the truck. That is UNACCEPTABLE. This is a brand new car and a week later it goes to the body shop to be disassembled and repainted? Not happening. I do not agree with this. It is impossible to match this color properly based off what I've read. No one wants a brand new car, and then to have it repainted a week later.

The engineer also said this isn't tire shine, which I don't believe either. So I told the him and the dealership, let's take another quicksand Tacoma put some tire shine on and drive down the highway. Let it sit for a day or two and wipe it off. If it cleans off right away then I walk away from this entire thing. I'm trying to prove this was in fact the tire shine and the dealer screwed up.

I addressed my concerns with Toyota Customer Care and they suggested I work with the dealership on getting in another vehicle. However, the dealer told me to go kick rocks.

All I asked for was to be put in another car so I don't have to go through this and they said no. So many people have gone through similar problems and were given new cars with no hesitation or recourse. I just happen to walk through the wrong doors.

Toyota Customer Care seems to want to help and make things right, but their options only limit me to a repaint or buy back. The financial impact of the buy back might not be worth it depending on how much they offer. I've never gone down that route, this is my first brand new car.

How do I go about handling this? I really like the truck and it's a shame.

    • Do I settle and get the damn thing repainted? 99% chance it will not be perfect, and the longer this takes the longer I don't have the truck.
    • Should I get Toyota to buy the vehicle back? Also a long process (30-45 days)
    • Should I continue to fight the dealer even though they told me to kick rocks multiple times?
    • Should I just leave it be and hope it fades over time?
    Any other suggestions?

Thanks for reading this long post. I appreciate it.

    I’d shoot for a truck swap .
I was offered a vehicle swap even though it was technically my fault for not looking it over 100% a day after I purchased it .

I had minor scratch on tail gate only though an im just dealing with it .

The issue is they are giving me a really hard time for a truck swap without trading mine in for less money. At that point i'd be out of $3-4K...

Your guessing it’s the tire shine because that’s all you can correlate but it could’ve either showed up to the dealer like that and given you were in a hurry as you mentioned before, missed the flecks or brown crap, or something else did it entirely.

It looks like tire shine based off the other pictures I've seen on the internet and how it's spread. Not just here on this site but others. I wish I could remember. I have pictures from before I purchased it, during, and after. But, since they were taken with a cell phone I can't get a good idea of it it was there before the fact. If it was there before the fact, the dealer said I took delivery of it and its my fault.

I'd be surprised if Toyota will buy that truck back. They offered to repaint it so I'm not sure what leg you have to stand on in terms of returning it for full price. Now I'm sure the dealership will take it back for a few thousand less but that's certainly not optimal. At best a really nice dealership would let you swap it out but I think most dealerships would not do that.

I get where you at. It sucks and it shouldn't be that way but it is what it is at this point. I explicitly prevented this by telling the dealership not to wash or touch my truck when it came in except for the bare minimum requirements of the PDI but if I were in your shoes I would just live with it. The spots in the first pic appear to be on the plastic chip guard so could replace that easily and the rest are on the super thick rock guard paint at the bottom of the rockers...that's gonna get dirty and chip quick anyway so I could live with that. No way would I let some hacks take apart the truck and repaint it though...I'd sell it before I did that.

Yeah I just looked at the other thread you linked and it looks just the same. I’d tell the dealer to pay to have it taken to a pro detailing shop and see what they could do before doing a repaint.

I know you don't want to hear this, but first I'd talk to a different detailer. I don't think they've provided you with entirely accurate information. The lower rear quarter has paint protection film (PPF) on it. That can be completely removed and replaced, quite easily in fact. If this is in fact the result of tire shine (which I'm still not convinced that it is) then that area is a non-issue as the contamination would reside on top of that PPF. That's a peel and replace scenario. If it's behind it, it's definitely not tire shine as that PPF was installed long before the tire shine was applied. Compounding the clear coat can and will level the clear coat, that's exactly what compounding is intended to do. However, the idea that the detailer is going to have to level the clear coat to almost nothing is extremely unlikely. Its extremely difficult to even make a statement like that without even attempting to compound the affected area. Regarding clear coat erosion and paint depth, did they use a paint meter to measure the depth on the textured lower vs the rear quarter panel?

Based on your post it sounds like you need to approach option 2 in your list:
"Should I get Toyota to buy the vehicle back? Also a long process (30-45 days)"

    I sense deja voo here.
It is pretty amazing for this to happen considering they are slapping this stuff on every day on every vehicle and once in a blue moon this happens.
Just hard to imagine a tire dressing staining the CC to the point of not coming off.
If it was me I'd break out the DA and start with a mild polish. Better than going thru a repaint. No different than removing the dealer installed swirls!:notsure:

No way thats tire shine. It wouldnt be perfect little dots. It would be streaks with dots at the end like throwing mud off of your tires.

Manufacturer defect in the paint for sure. Seeing it through the pics is different than in person I imagine but I dont see why you couldnt clay bar that off. Let them repaint it. The spot that looks the worst seems to be covered by the toyocare protective see through vinyl stuff. Have them give you an extended warranty instead of repainting!

I did talk to two detailers, one declined to touch it and the other one is suggested that it be polished out and the clear film be re-applied. Engineer did measure the depth all around.

They will fade OP! I promise. They will get smaller n smaller and gone within a week. When you put on tire shine, it can’t be running down dripping. But, if it happened again, it will fade. It happened to mine.

Most of our trucks, super white, quicksand, and a few others don’t have clear coat to protect this thin ass paint. The stain will stick, BUT, the sun will bleach it out because, well, no clear coat.

Yes it is. Tire sling/tire blooming is what it’s called. It will fade.

Because it beads up. It’s a chemical. I have a pic on here where a took a pressure washer to my truck because of this. I was 18” away and took off paint! I was so upset. Paint off, brown spots all over .... but after a few days, they were gone... but still had paint missing! Lol

Shouldnt a wax cleaner remove that then if its just tire shine?

And the other dude ended up repainting after they did a super shit job compounding and was not happy OP.
