I'm about to order 295/70R17.. Am I Crazy?

I've decided to go with the OME 3" lift kit. Im throwing on 17" wheels, and really want to go with the Nitto Trail Grapplers. However, with a 17" the only size I can go is a 295/70R17. Will this fit?

295/70R17 = 33.54x11.97

FYI - my wheels have a 4.5 backspace with a -12 offset

My other option is a 285/65R18... but i really didn't want the 18" wheel.

Any advice or opinions? Thanks fellas!

minor meaning you'll probably need to cut and weld the cab mounts, cut plastic on the bumper and fender and trim the fender lining... I'm running 17" wheels with 4.5" BS and I had to cut and weld mine. I'm running Nitto's too (sizes in the truck info on the left side of my post). I wouldn't recommend the 295's...

 

I actually PMed him asking him about those tires.. he said trimming definitely required and recommended the UCAs.

 

Thanks for the advice... so you had to cut and weld for the 285s?? I really don't want to go much smaller though. You say Nitto T/G... I take it those are the terra grapplers for that size, right?

 

I haven't changed my stock tires (17" Sport) yet, but in anticipation of wanting some 285's I did go ahead and install 4 Spidertrax spacers already, and ordered a 3" lift. Maybe the spacers can help you too?

 

im running the 285/65-18 Nitto trail grapplers with 5100's @ 2.5"

I had to trim a shitload of plastic from the fender and fender well, and I'm probably going to have to cut cab mounts if I flex too hard.

 

Yep, the terra grapplers. I also needed UCA's and an aftermarket front bumper so I could move the front wheel forward.

Trying to turn and go over bumps is IMPOSSIBLE without making some pretty serious changes. It's doable, but you need to think it thru very well.

Cut and weld cab mounts is step 1. Do this before you put on the new wheels and drive for any distance (I'd recommend a fit check but don't drive much and try to compress your front shocks to check the clearances) You can trim plastic little by little. The tires will remove paint as they scrape the fender/bumper.

I had to get the AP front bumper so I could move my front wheels forward. It was the only way I could articulate the suspension and clear the wheels in all scenarios.

 

Thanks for the advice man... that tells me that even if I roll with that size i'll probably have to do the same amount of trimming & cutting/welding.

Look's like I'll just plan on going with the 295s and realize install will cost me a little bit more $ since cutting and welding will be invloved... luckily there is a local off-road install shop who can do it all for me

 

Spacers make things worse. They almost guarantee you'll hit the cab mounts as the wheels move further back when you turn (the distance from the hub is increased which is bad for rubbing).

 

WOW... really wasn't wanting to change out the front bumper. I didn't even consider that to be something I would need to do. Damn these tacomas... my old Wrangler YJ was much easier to work on

 

BTW, these Trail Grapplers are smexy looking in person. And they're not near as loud as the Mud Grapplers.

They cut like crazy and still rub from what I've read. Go out and drive up an incline on one front wheel... then turn the wheel. If you clear the bumper, fenders and cab mounts, you can fit the tires... if not, they don't fit IMO.

 

you will need to chop the cab mounts, cut a ton of plastic, trim the fender near the bottom of the fender towards the door (i.e cut colored part). I would not recommend 295s unless you are ok with chopping up you fender, cab mount, and body. Good luck with that... or you could just get a bigger lift .. otherwise, you will rub every time unless all you do is drive straight on flat roads.

 

haha, thanks for the advice man. Now, with a 6" lift and 35s... would cutting be the same?

 

Dude, you're crazy going to all that work and spending all that money for barely 1/2 inch in tire size and a look that you will probably not be happy with after you hear how much it rubs. Just look around a little more and do some more research.
