Kentucky Lake OHV area

Has anyone ever been to the OHV area in the Land Between the Lakes? I am going on vacation there Sept 1-3 and plan on hitting the trails.

Any info would be appreciated, and if you would want to meet up and go Im down for that too.

 

I've only been camping and fishing on the Tennessee side so I can't speak for any OHV areas.

In general I'd get a good map of the place from one of the welcome centers. I think the north end of the park was torn up earlier this spring, maybe road construction, not sure of the details. There are many backroads in the park and not all of them are marked very well. I don't know how much (if any) damage they got from the flooding that happened this spring, but it wouldn't surprise me if some of the backroads were washed out or rutted. Some of the backroads are paved, some aren't. It should say on the map. I'd take a CB if you've got one. I think the cell coverage was spotty when off the main highway, but it could have improved since I was there.

Overall, it's a great place. Plenty of places for camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, horseback riding and wheeling. Lots of wildlife. You can go on a self-driven "safari" to see the buffalo and elk herds. We went once and had to get out of the truck (a no-no) in order to get a glimpse of a couple elk, didn't see any buffalo.

If you end up at the south end of the park, there's a good restaurant for fried catfish on Hwy 76/79 between Fort Henry Rd and the TN river. Can't remember the name, but it's right on the highway.

me neither, but I used to live in Los Angeles some people I talked to there considered TN to be midwest. WTF??

I appreciate the info. Ive been down there a few times, and actually some of my family (great great grandparents) lived down there before they flooded the river. Yea I know straight up hillbilly moonshiners.

I think Im gonna call down there once the time gets closer and see whats what. Let me know if you hear anything, like I mentioned we will be down there Sept 1-3.

We went mountain biking last summer down in the same area, and cell coverage was so so, god knows its out in the middle of nowhere. I remember looking once or twice when we were taking a breather.

 

Yea, I dont really either. I would consider it the south east. I guess in the scheme of things, its only 3 hours from my house and I live in west central IL.

Yea, there are bays in the lake that are named after the family. We have moonshine bottles (like the ones with XXX) on them that it was actually in..

Well, had a successful trip to KY this past week, and made it through all of the trails at the OHV area (the primary ones). Ill post some pics soon.

 

Well nothing like over a month later, but I uploaded a few pics on my build page of my trip down there. It was interesting because there were a lot of different kinds of terrain. It would go from rocky to mud quickly and then be sort of sandy.
