Anyone else not satisfied with their 6 MT?

Anyone else have the same kind of MPG's? Full size pickups get better gas mileage.

 

For my Taco, the TSB and accumulator delete were both big changes. I noticed a small power bump in the way that it will climb hills one gear higher and not lose speed.

I did try premium a couple times, both before and after the TSB. Both times, I lost MPGs. Not worth it in my case.

 

You can see my MPGs below. That is since new. After the TSB, I'm up about 2mpg (19.4 to about 21.5). I do tickle the rev limiter from time to time.

 

Op do you have off-road or sport. If you have a sport waiting to hear on an incline trying to backup let off Clutch and Brake trucktholds in place for 3 seconds

You can research research research some things you don't find out to you buy and youand you get more. if you have the sport it has the 3 second. That really sucks cannot start in the middle of incline with a load have to go down to flatland and start over or do the 2 low mod

I have driven a manual for over 20 years. My last Taco had 350,000 miles on the factory clutch. I do not think that is the issue.

I am very satisfied with my 2017 DCSB MT Sport and enjoy driving it on hilly NH roads daily. I agree reverse gear is a bit to high, but not a biggie as I tow and back up trailers weekly. I too have driven and owned many MT's (small trucks to Fire trucks shit economy cars to high end sports cars, you name it) in my entire driving time ~21 years and find this Tacoma to be very smooth, very forgiving and as mentioned fun. My stock Sport, I was getting 22 to 24 mpg with the front chin strap and a trifold Tonnopro. Now that I have 265/70-R17 KO-Bros without the chin strap, tonno on, and with winter gas I am now getting high 18's to low 20's if I baby it. Unfortunately I cannot agree with you, Toyota got this transmission right.

 

I am thrilled that we can still enjoy a Manual in our Trucks, Reverse isn't geared the greatest but oh well.

 

When my truck was bone stock and driving on freeways in the city i would get 17 mpgs at the very best while barely touching the throttle. I think I dropped 1 mpg with the shell and probably another 2-3 with lift and tires. It seems as if I must be the only one. Don't get me wrong, I love the transmission and the way it drives. By far the smoothest manual tranny I have ever drove. My only complaint is the reverse gear and lack of any power what so ever under 3000 rpms.

 

Thanks to those who posted informative positive reply's, I really appreciate it. I think if I get the 2lo mod and accumulator delete mod I might very well be happy with this truck. I absolutely love everything else about the truck.

 

Those mods are cheap compared to the cost of trading it in.

So here are my thoughts, Driving at higher elevations will change your fuel consumption. Changing tire size will change your fuel consumption. Adding a cap will change fuel consumption. All of these things would change fuel consumption in full size trucks too. How much I am not sure of. With the tire size change you need to calculate that difference into your math for fuel mileage. I have said it before and I will say it again. When have we ever had enough power. Companies make billions selling us more power and it will never be enough. The reverse thing sucks, The 2 wheel lo mod seems like it will help you a lot. I get about the same mpg running 285/70r17 Cooper sst pros. I can get better if I really try, but that takes effort on my part.

 

that was me after i got my truck, which i waited on for almost 6 months!

i could have dropped it and moved along to something that wouldn't have made me happy. i knew the truck had issues so i decided to fix them for my own preferences.

now my truck has all the power it needs, shifts great and clean, super responsive, and drives better than any truck i've driven. modding isn't for everyone but getting OV tune ECU tune, a URD short shift kit, a high flow exhaust, and some other things and this is a damn fun and functional vehicle w/o compromise. i'm surprised how far it's come from how it drove off the showroom floor. so i'm just saying if you take stock vehicles as they are, then you may be needing to move along. but if you want to dig your heels in for the vehicle you want it to be, you may be able to get that going.

Love my manual! My clutch assembly was replaced but that is Toyota’s fault.

I would never trade a manual for “better drivability”! Look at the woes the auto guys have!

 

Yep. This is what I do.
All you have to do is mind how much you turn when in 4L on pavement. As long as you're not cranking the wheel, you really are not going to cause problems being in 4L. I backed a trailer with my sandrail on it (about 5k#) up a very steep driveway. Worked great

1. Find the twistiest, turniest road in your area, and drive your truck like you just stole it up that hill.

2. Push it. Don't go below 4-5k RPM.

3. Report back.
