Who says they don’t make plug n play remote starters for 3rd gen Manuals? Well they don’t. But I did. Thought I’d share the news here because not everyone checks the classifieds on this wonderful forum of ours and there’s a lot of you that have been waiting for a long time. Figure I’d share this with you guys. I decided to take matters into my own hands because no one else has shown our 3rd gen MT brothers love from the remote starter industry/market. This is a big deal. It pained me to see a group left out that otherwise wouldn’t have if someone took it upon themselves to figure it out, design it and test it. N2 Designs did! Completely tooless install. Just as quick as the install for HKEY auto and Push to Start. 15 minutes!

Say hello to the custom designed, and engineered by me of N2 Designs plug ‘n’ play HKEY manual harness. Coming to a manual Tacoma near you! First of its kind to be produced for the consumer market. Same as the HKEY automatic install (TPMS gets snipped - and unlike the rest, check out that clamp connector for your two open lead wires after snipping!). Unlike the HKEY AUTO, we’ve integrated the relay that triggers your “clutch cancel” as if it was you doing it (a fused relay might I add so there’s no need to run anything to a fuse terminal through the firewall to the battery). Aside from TPMS like the HKEY auto guys, which they also HAVE to do, HKEY MT owners just need to tap (NOT CUT) the yellow clutch cancel wire using our T TAP on our yellow wire labeled “clutch cancel” in the picture below, that’s all (aside from some special firmware setting that had to be figured out by me prior to flashing, and I did). No one else has it, has done it, or sells it from a retail stand point. This is an N2 Designs exclusive. Get excited! You’re welcome!

I’d be doing you all an injustice by not announcing this news to you guys here!

 

By the way, it has “reservation” or “ready” mode that is a sequence required to make it “remote start ready” when you’re done driving and it goes like this:

When you come to a stop for the day or park:
- Foot on brake pedal
- Shifter to neutral
- Ebrake up
- Foot off brake pedal
- Turn vehicle off
- Open the door
- Exit
- Shut the door
- Lock the vehicle and walk away

Should you deviate from this or go back because you forgot something, the vehicle will take itself out of remote start ready mode. This is a saftey feature to ensure it doesn’t start in gear. The remote starter keeps a checklist of these things as you do it, if the door has been opened after the sllucessful sequence, it HAS to assume the ebrake might’ve been put down, or the shifter was bumped. Especially important for those who add the smart phone module and hand your phone to a nephew who thinks the app is a cool game while the vehicle is miles away at the dealership. If reservation mode has been met, even if it’s miles away and starts, it won’t start in gear.

No way around this and I won’t even try hacking it. Small trade off for big saftey. Plus, can one comfortably start a manual if they just can’t recall if was in gear or not? I’d feel like I’m playing the red or black on the roulettes table at the casino at that point!

I am interested...but I see a problem. The parking brakes really like to freeze up in the winter when you will want to use the remote start. Your gonna have a warm truck that doesnt want to move.

 

I've seen a few people say this. I must have been very lucky with all my trucks because I use the parking brake every day and haven't had it freeze yet. Maybe it isn't cold enough here

 

I like the idea and congrats on all the hard work you did in making this a reality but leaving a parked vehicle in neutral for a remote start has it's limitations for me. I guess I'm old school in that thinking. If it's sitting in my garage it works for me, anywhere else probably not.$.02

 

If you’re choosing to leave it in gear over being able to cool or warm a vehicle remotely before getting in for yourself, pets, kids, parents, friends and so on, for comfort, then you my friend are a very strong willed and STUBBORNLY old school person haha! Not judging here

 

Maybe you can add a set of chocks to the Manual Transmission kits.

 

I never leave my truck in gear and always use the ebrake. I live in freezing temps as well and have never had an issue with the drums freezing.

 

id watch out, becasue you said that it will probably happen haha. my driveway is on a hill i also live in a cold area and ive had to rebuild my ebrake once before and it started to freeze up again a little bit but then the car got totaled sooooo problem solved. but it can happen very easily in a cold area to have your e-brake seize up.

 

Curious why it was chosen to use a relay to trigger the Clutch Start Cancel button instead of using the clutch switch itself. To me this means that any time the truck is driven, the clutch start cancel button will be active, even when remote start is not used.

Nope. Not true. I use my trigger signal from the starter to actually power the relay, not latch it. My trigger is a ground signal that powers on the relay, and then I have a constant +12 on the relays power and output to the Clutch Cancel. Since my trigger from the remote start is only momentary, the relay turns off/powers down and resets. Now you have to understand this is no different that your hands pressing the Clutch cancel because when you press it currently if you don’t have a remote starter, it too stays active indefinitely after the vehicle is started and until you’re done driving. There is no way to “turn it off” once you’ve gotten what you need from it without cycling the ignition. Turning the vehicle off is when it turns off. So same with my product, it is only active when the remote start triggers it. I send it a pulse. The operation is no different than when you use the Clutch Cancel with your hand. Now if you’re concerned with me keeping +12V latched the whole time, don’t be, I’m not. I do understand that it might be misleading that the Clutch Cancel light “stays on” once it’s been used, but is it not like that with physically pressing it with your hand? Light stays on because it’s been “triggered”. It latches itself, and if it didn’t, whyvwould it stay on when you physically do it without ever having a remote starter?

Another reason to your valid question - bear in mind, to sell a product like this, you have to cater to the masses with simplicity, ease and time to install for the most novice. The clutch switch is not easily accessible, and requires more dash/trim removal whereas this button is in the same vicinity of where your other plug n play T harness will plug into, so you’re not going out of your way at all, if anything, you’re going to spend exactly the same amount of time putting this in as the automatic HKEY and PTS fellas will.

I welcome any and all other great questions like this or concerns. No one else has made anything remotely this easy for mass production and for sale to the 3rd gen MT consumer. I’d take this in a heartbeat if someone offered it to me years ago! Considering the price is less than HKEY auto with the next biggest competitor, this is a steal as prices will go up after its promotional and introductory period is over simply because there is no competition as well as the fact that we’re trying to get some noteriety in the game. We’re not doing to bad if you check this thread out...not one complaint! We’re also only wanting to hook members up simply because we’re Tacoma fans, yes we’re biased. Trust me when I tell you we charge other makes and models just under twice that price locally. TW holds a special place for us because of the great members and resources avaliable. One of the, if not best Tacoma forums on the internet!

Anyone concerned for freezing of the rear drums, I live in Alaska and use my E-Brake every night and have yet to have a lock-up. IF you get the truck washed and then park it you may have a problem but so far I haven't had a problem. It was a concern of mine leaving it in neutral and just using the parking brake but a quick conversation with Jimmy and I was satisfied with his responses about the sequences to get it to ready-mode. Got mine on order and can't wait to use it, the first one I've seen for a MT!!!

Yes the first and only one anyone has seen, currently in the WORLD. No one else is doing it and it’s because I think they don’t see the volume of MT as worth the value. I did it because IT CAN BE DONE, because I’m a tinkerer, I like to challenge myself to solve technical problems, and because the MT demographic was unnecessarily left out for no reason. It wasn’t rocket science, just a few days without sleep, problem solving skills, some programming, a tester vehicle, and viola, MT can now add one of the best plug ‘n’ play mods in the technology category, in my opinion. So if you still like a cold truck in the winter to wake you up, a hot truck in the summer to knock you out, by all means! To each his own!

 

Or you assess risks and realize there's potential for one. Let's call it what it is instead of downplaying it.

Personally I'd just carry some chock blocks and negate the issue. Neat product and I'm sure it'll be a hit.
