Towing a camper trailer is quite a bit more stressful than towing a boat, which you would tow, generally, for shorter distances. Camping trailers are heavier and have more air resistance. Do you at least flush the ATF at the recommended 60K intervals? I would probably go no more than 50K.

I place a vote for the Ultragauge. Not only reads ATF temps, but you can set audio warnings for user-set limits. I don't tow, but I do off-road and have seen temps up to 220; I will upgrade my puny OEM ATF cooler in the next year or so.

I don’t want to Takeover this guys thread but,

    Magnuson SC
    2.55” Pulley
Upgraded injectors (I forget the size)
    7th inj
    DT Headers
    DT Y pipe
    URD 3” cat back
    70 MM TB
    UCON Stage 3 tune
    Exhaust Cam gears
    Fuel pump
    @Roostfactor pulley wrap kit
    High flow coolant pump
    Larger coolant reservoir
    IPT valve body

    I guess that’s it.

400 HP is at the crank figured by MAF x something or other by Scott the UCON guy. That was a 40* F ambient morning.

Sub'd. Hit temps of 245° the other day and its had me a little worried. I regularly hit 220-235 on mountain passes when loaded. Normal driving around town stays well within mid 100's no problem. Definitely next mod on my list

Do you use 4th to keep it locked up? You’re monitoring pan temps, converter temps, or both?

I do use 4th. But i also use 3rd and occasionally 2nd depending on the situation. I had no idea 4th keeps it locked until i read this thread so ill definitely keep that in mind.

Im using an Ultra Guage to monitor, so im not exactly sure which temp its reading. I should probably look into that though

OK, yeah. If you can keep it in 4th it will help tremendously. I do understand though, that these trucks do not have the power to hold 4th at all times. Even in 4th it will start to hunt when you run out of power for the grade you’re trying to pull.

The ScanGauge reads both sensors. I’m not familiar with Ultragauge.

If the trans temp fluctuates rather quickly up and down, it’s most likely the converter temp you’re reading. If is more of a slow steady up and down, that’s the pan temp.

If your pan temps were 245* your converter temps must’ve been way up there.

Yeah itll jump fast. Ill lay off the throttle or change gears and itll immediately jump 5-10°. So hopefully converter temps then

The UltraGauge MX model can be configured to read the 2nd ATF temp sensor. I don't recall which is the default temp reading - converter or pan. The temps even out after a minute or so; temps differ when accelerating/de-accelerating. Certain non-MX models can be upgraded to MX but you have to mail the gauge to the manufacturer.

I hope so. Sounds right. When climbing a grade not locked up, or when driving aggressively, there is a big difference between pan and converter temps.

Look into it. If it’s like the ScanGauge, there’s a separate code for each sensor.

Here’s a video I made a few years ago before I had the Supercharger. This was to prove my point in a thread debating this very topic.

This is me going up a grade in 5th. Watch how fast the converter temp rises. Then I knock it down into 4th. The converter temp starts dropping immediately in the same grade at the same speed. Only difference is 5th vs 4th gear.

    Pan is TF1

    Converter TF2

    OP

Here’s the thread I made a few years ago when I installed thectrans cooler if it helps at all.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/my-trans-a-cooler-with-a-fan-install.352071/

The cooler has since been moved because my truck has changed considerably since then. I’m also no longer running both the factory cooler and the aftermarket one. I ditched the OEM cooler all together.

The link should give you a good idea of what you’re looking at to add a larger cooler though.

    Can someone help me confirm....

I'm reading about this "strawberry milkshake" and am i correct in saying that if i have a 2nd gen with tow package and the factory external trans cooler that my coolant is not cooled in the radiator and thus i don't have to worry about this issue? Or is my transmission still cooled with the radiator AND factory external cooler?

    I'm lost. :annoyed:

    Thanks

No it still goes through the radiator first the external is just piggybacked. But I wouldn't fret over the milkshake it's rare that they break like that. Every vehicle manufactured with an auto trans is cooled this way. I've only seen this happen a handful of times being a tech and there are millions of vehicles with the trans cooler in the rad. Your odds are about the same as the lottery in getting the milkshake if I were to play the odds.

FYI, torque converter can unlock in 4th too. Watch both temps when going up a steep grade and you will see TC temp start to rise above PAN temp when this occurs. Also rpm will increase by 100 or so.
