    I have Ultragauge MX and normal driving the trans temp reading is around 160 but I've seen it as high as 220's mountain passes and off-roading. I'm unsure where the gauge is reading from but I've been thinking of just replacing the oem external cooler with a bigger one.

    I've seen the Nissan Frontier's factory external cooler and it was more than twice bigger than Tacoma.

    The odds of the milkshake effect increase if you off-road, due to debris that may rupture the radiator, and/or the engine overheating, which can cause the rad to crack. Also, if you have a 2005-2010 Nissan SUV/pickup, your odds appear to be real good your rad will crack beyond 60K, but that's for another thread...

    If you are interested in bypassing the rad-ATF reservoir, consider a temp bypass control valve which directs ATF to the ATF cooler when temp hits 180, or stays closed, allowing the ATF to warm up. See Tru-Cool External Thermal Bypass or Derale Fluid Control Thermostat Kit. I'm sure there are others. The issue with these is not knowing when they go bad - unless you have a temp gauge.

    Well that escalated quickly lol. If i i wanted to bypass the radiator since my truck is about 10 years and 150k miles old, would an additional cooler such as a trucool be sufficient or would i also need a fan? Keep in mind im also pushing trans temps of 220-235 quite often

    @ProForce We appear to be in the same boat. My 07 is approaching 170K and want to, both, replace the dinky OEM ATF cooler, and bypass the radiator-ATF reservoir. It appears to me you would want a fan if you overheat the ATF by driving low speeds or long idling, as an off-roader would experience. If your ATF gets hot mostly due to towing, then a larger ATF cooler should suffice. Of course, any combination of the two, add the fan. I off-road, thus, I'm looking closely at a Derale model with an attached fan, and one of their thermostat valves.

    How did you get TF1 and TF2? I believe my ScanGauge only has TFT.

    Thinking of adding a second battery...
    if you have the tow package, you will be fine. My Tac has the package and is a manual. I've towed 5k pounds behind me from GA to WA without issues. No problems on the CO passes.

    It doesnt really matter what transmission temp sensor you guys choose to watch the transmission temperatures when using the scan guage or Ultra guage .
    It could be TF1 or TF2 .
    The trick to watching either sensor is making sure you are controlling your transmission cooling properly .
    175 degrees is ideal and this pretty much covers first / second / and third gen trucks .

    Do you have a manual transmission? I have an automatic, and I switch into 4D when going uphill while towing my boat. It runs the RPMs higher, similar to what you're doing with what I think is a manual.

    I have an auto. Towed my trailer with a bed full of stuff for 2+ weeks, over 2600 miles with no problem from CA to Moab, CO, NM, AZ, and back. We would setup a base camp and then go wheel for a couple of days then move onto the next state. These trucks are built like a Sherman Tank in my opinion. I say use it, don't worry about the little stuff. Way to much drama here sometimes. Thanks for the compliment. Take care and enjoy your truck.

    I’m confused about this the manual says at one point to always use 4 never D because of overdrive option. Previous thread in towing bible says never drive in D because of that
