Seeking General Advice for Lifting Stock 05 SR5

Just got a black 2005 Tacoma V6 Double Cab SR5 4x4. Completely stock except for a toneau cover. Looking to lift it somewhere b/w 3-6 inches. I like the look of the 6" lift w/ 35's for this truck. Is it possible to install a 3" suspension lift and then come back and add a 2 or 3" body lift as well? If so are there any critical parts or things I'll have to do/adjust for that size lift? I don't plan on doing any serious off-roading/rock climbing at this point (my wallet isn't that big), just looking to put some height on her for a more agressive stance. 6 inch fabtech lift. Don't do a body lift and get some nice tires otherwise the lift looks weird

 

It's not good to stack lifts. I would save some cash and get a rcd 4.5" lift. It's the best lift for our trucks(IMO)

3" lift imo. I don't really like drop bracket lifts. Best lift would be long travel, but would cost you to much.

 

Personally I'd skip on the body lift I had a pretty bad experience when I used a 3 inch body lift on my Nissan Frontier. It had all kinds of issues from hoses to wiring and not to mention it started making all kinds of funky noises but then again its a Nissan. Thats why I drive a Toyota now.

 

I appreciate the advice. I think I'm leaning towards the 6" Fabtech suspension lift. Most likely will put 33" tires on 18s. If I buy the lift kit online somewhere, will I have everything I need and be road ready after installation? Or would there be more things to purchace or adjust on the actual truck ie differential drop, alignment, etc..?

alright. if i go w/ a 3" Toytec lift ( what else do I need to buy? Does this kit lift the entire truck (front and rear), or do I need to buy more parts to lift the back? Also, I think the 33" tires look good under this lift, will there be any rubbing issues I need to worry about?

 

The first thing I would do is to make sure that you know what you want to do with your truck. Is it for looks? Is it for off-roading? Is it for racing in the desert? Is it for Mall Crawling? Is it a Dune Jumper? Is it a weekend camping thing?

In my opinion, the biggest difference is how much will the shocks get a workout? Do you go for $200 shocks or $2000 shocks? I know many that have burned off the decals of shocks in the matter of a couple of 1000 miles! That will result in a piss poor set up in the long run.

For all intents and purposes, this is just going to be basically for looks. I live in a rural area, and the truck would occasionally see a little bit of mud/driving through fields, etc. We get the occasional snow storm in the winter. But I wouldn't plan on any extreme off-roading, certainly not any desert racing or anything like that. I have a 14' Aluminum Jon Boat, which would most likely be the heaviest thing I'd be towing, probably a max of 10 times a year. Just looking to give the truck a little more aggressive look....Thanks for the responses

Good to know! So what is my best bet for a 3" suspension lift? I'm definitely a noob when it comes to this kinda stuff. Basically I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need to buy to get the truck up a little higher, considering I don't need anything crazy for extreme off roading. Is a lift kit the best way to go? and if so, will that include everything I need for all 4 corners of the truck?

 

I came to this forum with the same questions about lifting my truck. Most of the information you are seeking can be found by searching - that's what I did. I read all of the threads that I could find on the subject, as many of the topics, opinions, and things to look out for are already covered. I think this will be faster for you then waiting on responses to your thread. You will also get more information. Also, read a lot of build threads if you can. A lot of people on this forum have lifted their trucks, and will discuss the lift they chose and why in their build thread.
