Bed Dimensions for Sleeping Set-Up

I've tried the platform but didn't like not having any actual "living room" so to speak. In both of my Tacomas I've built sleeping areas but I had carpeted plywood on the bed with a storage box down the left side. I sleep next to the cabinet and have room for my gear beside me and in the access cab; if I need more room I have a Yakima box I can put on the roof rack on the shell. By not having an actual platform I can still use the truck to haul stuff and when camping it allows me room to sit up and move around some; changing clothes, sitting up while reading or using the laptop or organizing gear is possible as is cooking. Spend enough time in the back of the truck, whether it's in the parking lot of some ski resort, a climbing/hunting/fishing/etc. area and you will get caught in bad weather or just bored.

Alicia was asking me if I ever built the PVC thing after getting the plans. Here is my reply to her and a couple of pictures of what I eventually built back in 2016. Sorry to just now posting the pics. My message to Alicia: Yes I did get the plans (as I think you have them now too), but I didn't keep them and I didn't do it his way. I felt like the chances were high that I would mess up the gluing process and the whole thing would be wobbly. Instead, I built my own thing with wood. Sorry, no plans to share but here are two pics. I like that I can sleep on the box. And I can kind of sit up on it to get organized and dressed for the day's hunt or other activities. I have to duck the whole time but I'm usually rooting around in totes of gear anyway. It works for me since I'm still reasonably young and agile at 46, but there will come a time when I'm sure I'll always have a tent I can stand up in. Until then, I love the quaintness, efficiency and convenience this low-impact design provides. I can leave the box in all year and it still leaves room for loading in a lawn mower or stuff from hardware stores. Oh and in a pinch, a second person can sleep in the bed. Building the platform to go all the way across makes no sense with a Tacoma unless your shell is really tall. I made some compromises and met my needs in the middle. Maybe these will give you some ideas. I will say that I just sort of made this up as I went...after a ton of thought though. Good luck.

Along the road to today, someone from the forum asked me about this via messaging. I thought it added to this thread but I guess not. Here is what I said to and the extra 10 photos showing just how thrown-together this project it I have no cut lists and just made it all up as I went. Hopefully I'm finally sharing in one place everything people ask me about.

Thanks Creyts for your interest after so long. Sorry my response also has taken so long. I did sort of wing it with the help of my local hardware store. I bought one 4x8 sheet board and figured out several cuts to have them make for me on their big, reliable saw. That helped me with the top board and the bottom board of the drawer (the rest of the drawer is just a made up menagerie of wood I had around). The top board rests on the bed liner's formed ridge on the outside and on a single 1”x9”x6 foot board rested upright in between two ribs of the bed to support the sleeping platform board. I don’t have the dimensions of that board. I can just say that I cut it to fit the exact width of the 6 foot foam sleeping pad I bought at Army Navy Surplus. I added the small 6 foot trim piece to keep the foam pad from sliding off during travel. Oh and of course you have to cut everything so you leave just enough clearance that if you are lucky you can install quality folding drink holders. The more I think about this project, the more I realize how much I really built this whole thing one board at a time, making it all up as I went based on my needs and all I’d need on Pinterest and this Tacoma forum. Sorry I don’t have more formal plans. Share your own photos someday. I'm sure you will create something nicer than mine. I know my limited skills. I got the job done and I sleep in my truck a few nights every year so, mission accomplished. But it lacks finesse.

So I know this is 6 years old but I'm hoping I can get that cut sheet from DrainBung - I'm also new to forums so pardon the ignorance of how to get someones attention.

" For a quick 2X6 across the bed in the provided pockets it's 57". Use the search and there's a lot of info out there.


I used 1.5 PVC to make a frame and attached a plywood cover. The "main" frame is set up as a single bunk and has connectors that attach a second frame for a full bed setup. The 1.5" rides perfectly in the ribs of the bed so it can't move anywhere once you close the tailgate. The 4-way PVC connectors are available online ( http://www.pvcplans.com/pvc-suppliers.htm ) if you want to do the full bed. I have the cut list as a PDF file if anyone needs it. It's a hell of a lot lighter than lumber."
