    Good morning gentlemen,
I’ve read this thread from the beginning and I’m intersted to see you guys can help me. I have a 14 4Runner 136k miles 4.0L with the A750F tranny. The truck is all stock with the stock 3.30 gears. My problem is I feel like my 4Runner is extremely sluggish compared to my buddies 11 Tacoma (4.0L/ A750F lifted 3” and 33” tires. Has 3.70(?) gears) his truck is just, snappier. It’ll chirp the tires if you hit. Mine, no way!! I’m still getting the advertised mpg, but I cleaned the throttle body for good measure. It was a little dirty.

The Tacoma as well as another gen 4 stock 4Runner (my in-laws) seem the same accelerationwise (again the gen 4 4Runner will chirp the tires if you get on it) mine, yeh, we get there when we get there.

Thoughts? I’m considering the aforementioned Younger Shiftkit and line pressure booster.

I brought the truck to the Toyota dealer, they were useless.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hello Gearcruncher!
I have read your great posts on the 750F shudder issue and looks like you know your stuff! Got a question; Looks like mine has just an occasional a shudder between 3-4th on light acceleration after warm up. Did the tests and looks like converter lockup issue.
    1. should I turn up the SLU 1/4 turn
    2. get a ZIP Kit installed
    3. get a rebuild valve body
    3. just get a salvage yard tranny for $1K with low miles? Mine currently has 250K and wonder if the rest of the trans is worn and not worth it.
    Cheers!

Something else for you shift flare and shutter followers. HPtuners has recently released support for the 1GR platform. The horsepower seekers and tinkers have been making a incredible progress with getting tunes dialed in and updates made to the available maps and parameters of the ecu control. Essentially, the tuner allows the owner FULL control over engine and transmission electronic parameters. This is not a canned tune, it is the responsibility of the owner to load and tune. However, there are some available canned tunes that are being tested now from other members, not a specific company. One of the current issues being tested is the opportunity to tune out some of the shift flare issues. Shutter MAY also be part of the equation. Maybe @gearcruncher can comment on the viability of tuning the characteristics that we have all come to dislike about the 750. Maybe the issue is mostly mechanical and the tuning is a bandaid or mask? Maybe we might smoke a couple of trannies trying....stay tuned it could be interesting.

    Here's the thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hp-tuners-for-2005-2015.600793/

I figure if you're willing to get into your valve body, you'd probably be willing to work on the tune. But do be careful. There is a reason most standard off the shelf tuners don't touch the stock transmission parameters.....

You have a couple options .
Was the fluid changed within the regular service intervals ?
A zip kit will keep you running and seal up all the worn valve body components
Have you had the pan off to check on the contamination level ? This would be the first step
Once you get the pan off and establish a contamination level , we can decide from there what to do .
Chances are your transmission is salvageable if the issue is just with the converter lock up .
Fresh fluid with Lubeguard additive usually cleans up the shudder . A Sonnax kit will really help

I like the idea of being able to tune individual sensors and solenoids as well as shift points and convreter applications .
The programming is a little above my paygrade though .
In the past , I can in most cases assist members with factory diagnostics both electrical as well as mechanical .
With this being said , members approach me when they have a factory problem with the transmissions internals or the electrical components that control the transmission .
I am not sure how to proceed with an aftermarket tune as a fix .
I believe I would have to purchase the software and experiment before I could begin making recommendations to apply a tune to fix a problem .
Regardless , I like the product and have seen a couple issues already fixed using just the tune as a repair .

Does the SLT solenoid have adjustment?
IF so can could we turn it some to fix this issue?
This is what is happening to me a lot. I am trying to find the best way to fix it.

Unfortunately , the SLT solenoid does not have the ability of being adjusted .
The fix here requires the solenoid to be replaced as it has failed mechanically .
This means that the computer in your truck does not see anything wrong with the solenoid and you will not get a code , however the mechanical portion of the solenoid has failed creating the issue .

2007 Tacoma 4x4, V6-recently it stuck in 3rd gear and would not go into 4th or overdrive. Has anyone else had this issue?

I recently changed the Neutral Safety Switch and sprayed the harness with electric grease.

I haven't had time to put it on my code reader yet..but will update once I do.

Ony has happened once today and now is working fine. Looking for expert or grease monkey opinions.

    Thanks!

Most likely because you changed the switch .
When you disconnect the switch and if the battery was still connected , the computer in your truck saw a break in the electrical contacts .
When this happens , the ecm in your truck puts the transmission into limp mode . When the transmission is in limp mode , you get no 4th and 5th gear
Have you adjusted the switch correctly ?
Scan for codes is next as you assumed:thumbsup:

So this didn't start after the NSS was replaced..it happened a couple weeks after.

I am not sure if I know how to adjust the switch?

    Thanks man!

I just added a ratio tek kit to my trans and it has a huge rpm flare from 4-5. about 1500rpm. i followed the instructions to the t and the how to by mightytacoman. everything works great when the shifter is in 4. but in D it flares on 4-5 shift, and sometime when going real slow it doesnt seem to shift into 1st and it bogs.
i put the adjustable valves in the recommended positions (could those be wrong for my tranny?)
are there any settings that i can double check or adjust? or did i toast my valve body somehow.

    thanks

Something else you can do is to turn the allen screw on the slu solenoid in about a 1/4 turn. This helps with the 4-5 flare too. Double check your trans fluid levels now that you have driven it some.

    Hey All,

Been a while since I've posted in this thread. Not because my transmission problems have gone away. They haven't, and seem to have become worse. Fact is, I had bigger fish to fry.

Last fall my Sequoia was due for a frame rust inspection by Toyota. Anything else the truck needed was put on hold during the runup to inspection day. Found a comparatively ethical service department manager and lucked out. My frame failed inspection. Got a new one in December.

It didn't go off without a hitch. I'm still working on stuff related to the frame replacement, but starting now my engine & transmission have priority due to a new symptom.

Over the past 2 weeks, whenever I've been forced to really goose the throttle to clear freeway traffic, a smell best described as a combination of burning rubber and burning hair comes into my cab for a short period of time. This has happened a total of 4 times.

The last time was a couple of days ago. I had to pull over to allow an ambulance to pass. Although I didn't need to, I stomped on the gas pedal just a little more than necessary when I pulled away from the shoulder. Got the same smell after the RPMs dropped, and this time it even stung my eyes a little. There will be no more freeway tests.

No change in engine or transmission performance afterward, with the possible exception of part-throttle shifting being a little less crisp. I'll provide a listing of all services performed on the truck since last fall and an update on current status in a separate post.

At this point I'll leave it to those more experienced, especially @gearcruncher, to help me identify the source of that smell as well as the underlying issue. If anyone else reading this has encountered anything similar please chime in.

    Thanks
