I have a 2007 PreRunner with a v6. The air conditioner compressor has seized up and now the belt is just slipping on the AC pulley. Needless to say this won't last long. I have a few questions.

I plan to replace the compressor myself. I have received mixed information regarding this. I have been told that the receiver/dryer is integral to the condenser and therefor the condenser must be changed as well. I have also heard that this is not true. I can not locate a separate receiver/dryer so I can only assume it is in the condenser.

Next, my schedule is pretty jammed and I will not have time to do this for a couple of days. Right now I am driving a back-up vehicle. I would like to make my Tacoma drivable until I can make this repair. I have been told these vehicles were not built without AC so a serpentine belt for this vehicle without air does is not specified.

I was going to purchase the shorter belt and just bypass the compressor pulley. If anybody has experienced this and done this, any input would be appreciated especially if anybody knows the length of the belt needed to bypass the compressor.

I guess when you said the compressor is seized I would start by replacing that... Not mess with other parts of the system yet. Please be responsible and get your AC system drained at a shop and not just pollute the air (like I did on accident :anonymous: )

I intend to get it properly evacuated but still I just don't have time to get this all done right now. Replacing the belt won't take long and I can drive the truck. Yes I won't have AC but I will have use of the truck until I can squeeze it into my schedule. A shorter belt will just not go around the compressor pulley.

    Thanks

Why not remove the A/C belt in the mean time, so you can drive it?

    - OK, so he has a serpentine belt, ignore this suggestion :D

If you just go to a good parts store they should help you grab a belt that fits. Shouldn't be too bad.

Gonna stick my neck out again . . . .

I had an A/C clutch seize on me many years ago (couldn't turn the compressor off), but the compressor internals were fine. Luckily, I did not have a serpentine belt so I just removed the belt (trail fix, cut it off). I replaced the clutch when I got home, rather than the entire compressor.

Is it possible that just the OP's clutch has frozen, or do 2nd gens not have a separate clutch.

Not a separate clutch. Also according to the dealer, the Tacoma (at least that year) did not come without AC so no belt is specified for one not having AC. What I intend to do, is remove the existing belt, use a rope or string and go around all the pulleys, idlers and tensioner, except the AC, remove it and measure it's length, then go to a parts store and just get one that length.

OK folks, some update, maybe some information others can use and a couple of new questions. First the receiver drier is part of the condensor so that should also be changed.

Second, the factory serpentine belt is a 7 groove belt 83 and 1/2 inches long hence a part number of 835 at Auto Zone. After taking some measurements, a belt 80 inches long, (part number containing the number 800) is 3 1/2 inches shorter. All other belt routing is the same EXCEPT, the belt will now go over the top of the alternator pulley as it normally does but instead of going straight down to the A/C compressor, around IT'S idler to the crank pulley, it now will go directly from the alternator to the crank pulley. The back side of the belt just BARELY clears the top of the A/C pulley but as they say, an inch is as good as a mile.

Now for my question. I know the expansion valve is attached directly to the evaporator and that is apparently buried pretty well under the dash behind the glove box. I have searched quite a bit (UTUBE, and other video "how to" sites) and can not find any help to guide me to that thing. If anybody knows of a good "how to" on replacing the expansion valve on a 2007 Tacoma with the 4.0 engine, it would be greatly appreciated.

So in any case, if any of you find yourselves in my situation, and 80 inch, 7 groove belt will take the air cond compressor out of the picture.

Hey I am digging up an old post. I believe my bearing in my compressor is going out. Did you have any issues with the defrost after you bypassed the ac compressor. Oh and thanks for the leg work on figuring out the belt length!!

Get a delphi complete compressor they are around 300 from rock auto and are the oem supplier for these trucks. U can get to the desiccant bag in the condenser there is a large plastic hex nut located on one of the sides of the condenser and can be accessed from the bottom.
make sure to have the a/c system evactuated and charged with a professional machine or you will never get all of the air out i can explain how many times i have seen the auto part diy cans overcharge, undercharge and damage compressors.

I am just planning to order this OEM rebuild. It can be done without removing the compressor from the truck. My compressor doesn't look anywhere near as bad as the OP's.

That is just the clutch portion. U need to check if the interals are seized. Use an 8mm socket on the center nut and try to spin the compressor by hand if it doesnt move it needs to be replaced. If its just the clutch that needs to be replaced then a little hint for u. Thoes c clips are directional so dont put them in the wrong way. Also just use enought spacers to get the correct airgap.

Thanks for the tip on the c clips, I do not think i have seen that before. Ive watched a few videos and do not remember that being mentioned. But, Mine isn't seized up. I am still driving the truck around. The Bering is just starting to go out. AC still works just fine. I am going to replace the clutch first, I am 99.9% sure that's all that is wrong with it.
