I’m a diesel tech and work with diesels on a daily basis. I’ll stick to my 4bt
A rebuild for a 4bt is about $1200 all said and done including machining if you build it yourself. Also has zero emissions unlike the 2.8

    2nd gens started in 2005-2015. 1st gens are 95-04.

Can't go wrong with either. Just much more suspension and other bolt on or minimal modification needed parts for 2nd gens.

1st gens are just too old and too few were made. Market place for them is drying up for aftermarket support

RB26DETT and ATTESA swap would be cool.

That’s why full custom gutting is the way to go!! :burnrubber:
Only thing Toyota left on my truck is the cab, part of the frame, and bed sides:transformer:

If anyone wants to see how much of a pain it is to swap an engine this large into a Tacoma check it out.

Whats a good upgrade website for gen 1. I have no idea what the different options for mods are.

There isn't a one stop shop for 1st gens. Its all custom and small time shops that provide stuff. Decent places to browse though are Wheelers Offroad and Low Range Offroad.

Then here as well, check out all the vendors.

You make it sound like modding a first gen is rocket science...

-Pick your front CO (King, Fox, SAW, etc) or strut (OME/Bilstein)
-Pick your rear shock and leaf pack (TG, AP, Alcan)
-Pick your bumper/slider vendor (TG, AP, 4xInnovations, etc)
    -Pick your locker (Spartan/Lockright/ARB/Grizzly)

Done, all bolt on and ready to wheel anything within reason.

Its not that simple. Never is.

Thats a very basic way to go about it and think about it. will be be a good truck? Fuck yeah. But its a good truck as it is before you do that stuff.

To make it perfect for whatever it is you want, your own truck and modded to fit how you want to drive and how you like to use it. To do that you're gonna have to get customized. And the options to do that just are limited now for a 1st gen. Take the rear suspension for example. No off the shelf leaf pack is worth..anything for someone hauling a lot of gear for long trips. They all suck. Thats a custom leaf pack. Then the stock mounting points are terrible and limit your travel very badly. So you have to custom mount rear shocks to get the most out of the travel. And even after all that..you'll barely pull 10'' of travel.

On a 2nd gen there are literally 4 kits that come to mind that make the rear end pull 14-18'' and bolt in hydro bump stops. And I promise there are more then that im just not about to look them all up. Still takes effort to get it in but all the thinking is done. For the front there are Mid travel setups, +2LT kits and +3.5 and +4.5. All bolt in.

If you aren't realizing how many vendors in just the last year or so have stopped supporting 1st gens..you're no paying attention..which probably means you like your truck as is and don't give a shit about it! haha I wouldn't either if I had it built now.

There just aren't the options for a lot of things like there are for the 2nd/3rd gen. The 2nd gen also outsold the 1st gen by a LOT. and the 3rd gen uses the same frame and suspension so they will be supported for a while to come.

Its and easy answer to the question "Which generation has the most options for customization". And its not 1st gens. That's all Im say. I own 3 1st gen tacomas right now haha Im not about switch either. Just the facts of the market right now.

Now sure. If you have the shop, tools, time, and skills plus money. Any vehicle is possible to modify in any possible way. But not everyone can do that.

I’m east of the Mississippi so go fast stuff is completely off the radar. Woods wheeling and crawling is pretty much all that exists here so there’s no LT, fiberglass or SUA’s

right so your talking SAC then. Which is fully custom anyways no matter what.

Or just mid travel. Which there is nothing wrong with a great dialed in mid travel setup. you can haul ass with that too.

The writing is on the wall for 1st gens is all. They are old trucks now.

Love me some older Nissan. A straight six and dual turbo yummy for sure. I guess keeping it Toyota with a 2JZ would be nice too

Before Renault bought them they were unstoppable. But the French can ruin anything mechanical and these underbuilt Jatco CVTs are killing Nissan's relaible name. I won't lie, a VQ35/37 or even an old VG30/33 would kick ass. The Nissan V6 engines have a much higher tuning potential with boost than similar Toyota engines of the time.

Yeah, and now Nissan is really regretting it with all the troubles Ghosn has caused recently.

For Calif any motor newer that the motor being replaced is legal . The motor that is being swapped in must have all emissions related components that were originally meant for it

Nissan has always been so much more ambitious than the other Japanese manufacturers when it comes to output vs displacement.

Also points if you guess the car and the engine I'm assembling right now

    I see eyelids!
    240SX?
Can't tell what the engine is.

Almost asked if it was a Z car. Forgot about the 300zx had flip up headlights on some years. Neat.

One day I'm gonna have a Midnight blue S30, either with the original twin carbureated L24 or I'll 2JZ swap it for fun.

There's plenty of room in a 1rst gen to put a Pat Musi 903 cubic inch Tall deck Chevy motor between the frame rails

Or even a Pro Line 481X would fit nicely!!!
