Remote Start Push to Start

I am having a viper remote professionally installed by a local car audio shop. The installer brought to my attention that I will have to give up one of my fobs... Why do they need the fob? Now I'll have to pay for a new fob and programming at the dealer..

That’s a question you need to ask the Viper dealer... but I agree with most others on this forum, why let an installer butcher your vehicle’s wiring when there are several Plug and Play units available that don’t require a “professional” to install? Do some online homework... save some money... and get a better product.

Alarms are almost pointless these days. Everyone ignores them. Had my viper in the late 90s and early 00s, haven’t had one for over 12 years now.

 

As a professional installer (that does not butcher peoples wiring) and the owner of a push-to-start taco with a remote start system, there is zero reason you need to give up a key fob unless he is selling you snake oil.

All modern remote start systems (including those mentioned above) have bypass modules built in that allow them to crank without a key in the vehicle. And to be 100% honest, there is no way in hell I want a fob in my truck when it is remote-started. Break a window, open the door, and now you own my vehicle.

Hopefully he has not done the work yet, and you can still back out or choose a different unit. You should absolutely not have to sacrifice a fob in a toyota vehicle.

For the money, the units linked in posts above are absolutely the way to go.

Before seeing this post I went with Viper because a few friends have had good luck.

 

I have a viper unit myself, and almost exclusively install viper products (with an occasional compustar thrown in) which is why I'm curious he told you it needed a fob sacrificed. He may have been selling you a product I'm not familiar with, but I can't even find anything on their dealer site that doesn't have a bypass module built in anymore.

Dball2 which is essentially what the plug-and-play options are. I have a viper DS4 on my wife's car because it needed old-school wiring, and we wanted to add security and a long-range remote.

 

I’m very happy with 12volt solutions and the cell network add on. Best of all no extra fob to carry around.

 

They had Viper, Compustar and some other basic systems. I chose their 1/4 mile 1 button system. $535 installed. I'm going to give them a call in the morning and ask them in more detail. You guys are great

I’ll use Best Buy prices because I’m a Geek Squad agent so those are the prices I know.

Viper ds4, which includes 1 button ¼ mile remote, and labor runs $280 at Best Buy. The SmartStart module adds $200 (worth every single penny)

That puts you at $480, maybe a hair over $500 after tax, for their current top-tier unit AND the smartstart module. This unit can also have a security upgrade added to it (siren and multi-purpose tilt/shock/glassbreak sensor) very easily giving you aftermarket security. And it has several additional outputs that can be customized for whatever you want. One could be tied in to a tool-box lock to make it keyless. In my wife’s car, I have one set to trigger the heated seats if the temp is below 50 degrees.

I know small local shops have to make money, but goodness gracious that’s expensive. AND he’s saying it needs a fob sacrificed? I’m not feeling it.

Very happy with Audio solutions vendor here on TW as well. No experience with N2 but Jeremy followed thru immediately, shipped immediately, and his video install was spot-on. Harness was perfect and easy to plug in. Took me 30” but its a 10 minute job. Im overly cautious. Click lock on oem fob 3x, done...

Ok so let me being with the whole remote start that need to borrow, I mean steal one of your fobs to be installed next to the module...that’s because it’s shit. The unit doesn’t have a bypass, it’s just an expensive relay to turn your ignition on but can’t do it on its own, which is why your “fob” needs to be next to it so it’s like you’re sitting in the vehicle starting it yourself. Garbage. They still sell those, and I laugh and cringe at the same time.

My modules are plug n play, you can install them yourself, watch the videos in my thread that these guys linked you above. I set the kits up for you so you just plug them in!

My kits require a FOB only be present DURING the install, specifically during the teaching of your FOB to the bypass (Remote Starter nodule). Then keep both FOBS, we don’t need them again or in the vehicle, the remote starter will handle it going forward.

OK let me circle back to my first statement above, you have a push to start and are going to spend $535 and all you get is the long range RF kit with your Remote Starter? My kit lets you use you OEM fob to start and stop the engine (by pressing Lock 3 times), and for $535, you can get the 100% plug n play remote starter, the long range RF 2-way feed back kit, AND the smart phone add-on module that let's you use your phone and the free app to start/stop the engine, lock/unlock the doors, check the door status and battery voltage, and GPS locate your vehicle, and still have $18 left for lunch. Like someone said above, take your time and do some homework/research. Don't blow hard earned cash. I see those prices and I just cringe...that's robbery. It's not right, that's why I'm transparent.

I installed a Viper system maybe 8 months ago at Geek Squad. Can I take it back so I can disable the alarm? I kinda got tired of it, and I just want the key fob function.

 

The remote push start thing is cool but after reading into it, once you start the truck with the remote and open the door the truck turns off? Why even bother?

 

I’m sure you can. It will depend on the unit itself but I haven’t seen one that can’t be disabled, even if you just disconnect the siren.

 

So my truck is cool on our lovely 105 degree summer days, or so the frost is off my windshield and my steering wheel isn’t touchable on our cold days
