How to Drain/Refill Automatic Transmission

I need to do my second drain and fill soon at 112,000. The last time I did it there was talk about needing to pull out the jumper wire once temp check has been entered, I left it in last time. What is the consensus of this now?

 

I'm fairly certain pulling the wire while the engine is running will take it out of temp mode.

When I did my initial level check a few weeks ago, I left it jumped

 

You can remove the wire after you get it into temp check mode. Here’s a video of my 07 Tacoma getting up to temp, I pulled the jumper wire and plugged my Ultragauge in to verify that my trucks temp check range was between 97° and 115°F.

You are probably right, but just for clarity, once temp is reached it doesn't need to be in temp check mode anymore. Then you can just check the fluid, confident that the fluid is at the correct temperature.

 

On my 07, it would remain in temp check mode even after pulling the jumper wire out until the key was cycled off.

Except I'll add that keeping it in check mode allows you to monitor the light. If it starts flashing you'll know the fluid is too hot.

Shouldn't be a big deal most of the time. But if the transmission is warm and/or the ambient air temp is high...the check window can be narrow

 

Great write-up. Worked for me. Save the fact I never did get the AT Temp Light to come on. '13 DCSB OR PreRunner with Tow Package. After about 15 attempts, just plugged in the Car Scanner Pro and watched the temp. The IR thermometer on the bottom and side of the pan tracked within 2 deg of the readout. Took me about about 35 minutes of idling (due to trans cooler?), (60F starting garage temp) to get to 115F.

Drained 2.4 l out when cold, and based on many of the comments put 3.4 l back in prior to the warmup procedure. A good flow drained then replaced the plug when the stream was a pencil lead thickness.

The color was a dark red/brown with my mileage of 62k miles. I bought it used, the receiver hitch doesn't have any wear on the inside, but it has lived it's life in Phx temps the entire time according to toyota owners service and carfax report. I tend to think the heat of Phx puts any vehicle in the severe use category whether or not it also gets coupled with stop n go and or towing. Oh, and replaced the fluid with Toyota ATF-WS.

 

Scored 12 quarts of WS and 4 gaskets for $95.

Going to do a series of 4 drain and fills over the next couple of weeks

 

1 down...3 more to go. Was pleased to see my factory fill looked pretty good. Had some red color to it, not very dark and didn't feel or smell funny. I'll do another one tomorrow and 2 more next weekend.

'15 TRD Sport PR. 55k miles. 1/3 city driving, 2/3 highway driving. No towing.

I recommend the OBDII trick. And be patient if the transmission is cold and the outside temp is too. About 29° this morning. Took a good 30 minutes of idle time to get the light.

 

Add some lubegard to your final fill

 

Well...the rig had been sitting for several hours after driving it about 20 miles. So I decided to go ahead and do the 2nd D and F this afternoon. Drove another 15 miles or so afterwards.

Nothing to report. Same as the first. The only difference was it took less than 10 minutes to get the light.

I'll nail the 3rd one in the morning

Having no performance issues. Not sure it's really worth it.

Noticed there were several flavors. Which one are you using?

 

Gearcruncher suggested it and no issues with my transmission either.

 

@bigfoote13 There is no need to be sticking wires in the ODB2 port. The IR method is accurate also. I have come within a degree difference when comparing ATF temps between my UltraGauge readings to my IR gun. Measurements taken at center of pan. My readings taken with 75-80 degrees ambient temps, thus more extreme ambient temps may show a wider range, but I suspect not by much.
