Ah gotcha. good call. And regardless, I imagine that Matt would roll it into future updates once he gets time. So I will get the TSB and see how she does... I fucking love this truck but god damn shifting sucks sometimes. It’s just so hard to replicate good shifts.

Anyways, St Germain I’ve been meaning to ask you some questions (I’ve seen you post a lot). You have the URD short shifter? Or the core? And do you like whichever one you have/is it worth it?

I'll answer too since I also have the URD STS and love it. Do yourself a favor and be patient with the install if you get one. Despite what most people say you can do it without cutting. I had one on my 2nd gen and loved it there too. It doesn't reduce the throw on the 3rd gen as much as the 2nd, but the throw on the 3rd gen is sorter stock to start with.

To be honest, I guess I’ve just never driven a manual with a short throw and so I don’t know if it’s something I’d enjoy or not? That sounds weird to say but yeah I guess I just don’t want to drop the money when, unlike the OVTune mod, there’s not exactly a 500 page thread of people saying “omg this is the best how did I drive without it” ya know

I'll be honest, it's not a night/day difference, but it is nice. It's not like a STS you would find in a sports car that goes from 4-6" to like 1". I think it gives much more feel to the shifts and makes it much easier to find the gears. It helps with the 1-2 shift also.

More just got my hopes up that toyota was finally including the 18MT ... but carry on and I will keep saving pennies for the tune.

Great information. I appreciate it. Now, to not divert this thread any further, I have one more OV tuned question for you gentlemen.

I have never put anything other than 87 octane in my truck. I’ve had it two years now... guess I’ve always just been taught that unless a vehicle requires it, it’s a waste of money. So why are there SO MANY people in this thread saying they run 91 octane? Feels like I’m missing something

Lol. You would think that with this tune though, which is supposed to correct the power delivery, that it wouldn’t be necessary? Just looking to understand

    Edit: tune not time*

So the main goal of the 87 tune is to correct all the flaws in the stock Toyota calibration. The main focus was on driveability. They are well documented in the many pages of this thread. The 87 tune gives little to now HP gains while higher octane tunes give ~25 HP (don't quote me, the info is in the 1st post I think). For MT vehicles one of the big complaints is when trying to start quickly, like when you want to make a quick left turn from a stop in traffic. Stock, the truck falls on it's face for at least 1s before taking off. Extremely dangerous and at the very least annoying.

    In general:
fix the stupid throttle response and torque limiting
    improve VVT and ignition

Think back to the good old days of carburetors and leaded gas hot rods. Factory cars were on average about 8:1 compression and guys were pumping up the compression ratios to 11:1 or more get more HP. This resulted in "pinging" (pre detonation missfires) the solution was a higher octane rated fuel. The Tacoma is running 11.8:1 compression so it only makes sense that it will benefit from a higher octane fuel. It runs on 87 but to achieve this it backs off on ignition timing to prevent detonation,as a result it reduces HP. I think I got it right...clear as mud...lol

Awesome explanation guys. I really appreciate the help. I may have to try some 91 octane in my truck now!

I’ve been curious about that. Difficult to do? Is that one user still selling the pre bent lines?

Looks like he is trying to get enough orders to do a batch. If he doesn't he is going to be gone until March. You could also do the dremel mod, that isn't any harder than changing the line. Changing the line or doing the dremel mod are super easy.

Search my posts on there, you can also get a custom made braided stainless line for about the same price. I'll be installing mine probably next weekend to check that the length is correct.
