True. My cousin was a master tool & die maker at Dana and helped make the tooling to form those frames. Toyota spec.ed a high strength steel that was not as corrosion resistance as other alloys. He warned his boss and the Toyota engineer concerning this problem at the start of production... they did not seem to care??

I think it's better to leave a vehicle outside in cold climates, especially where salt is used because it will experience fewer freeze/thaw cycles. Salt is much more effective when the temperature gets closer to thawing out. Salt is less effective at turning ice to salty water at lower temperatures, like below 15 F (-10 C) or something like that.

Hmmm. Hadn't thought about it like that. Makes perfect sense, but there'll still be quite a few natural (as opposed to garage induced) freeze/thaw cycles every winter anyway, right?

@robssol - You are getting into semantics, Dana can only build what Toyota specification tell them to build, so yeah Dana built a 2 layer frame that they were paid for with Toyota's OK. I ask again, I wonder what the thinking was of Toyota when they made the frame of 2 metal layers instead of just one?

We will never know what the thinking was unless the engineer who decided on it comes forward and says : I was that guy and this is why I chose it." Very unlikely.

The fact that this is a voluntary "warranty extension" by Toyota, and not a forced recall tells me there are plenty of "smoking guns" internal discussions that are in existence w/r/t the choice of frames and would have come out anyway and resulted in a forced recall. Or worse. A corporation just doesn't usually come out and out of the goodness of their heart choose a path that will cost them $3.4 Billion unless the alternative is worse.

That was my question as you stated in your post, I guess Toyota just didn't care as you stated.

Or, they thought- "So what if we cheapen the frame material? It only has to last the duration of the warranty."

Not really voluntary. They got sued in a class action and this is the court approved settlement

I agree the "LSC" was really in essence an under the radar recall. Toyota at first avoided all the bad media reports/news by offering Tacoma owner 12 years from their "in service date" to have frames inspected, undercoated or replaced. It wasn't until a lawyer from Arkansas that I talked to over the phone started a class action lawsuit, that you saw the headlines in the news about a $3.4 billion settlement, which extended the warranty till 1/31/19, so it took a class action lawsuit to make Toyota admit to the public the 2005-2010 Tacomas had frame rust problems.

Not quite. Living in the NE, in salt heaven, i have always made it a point to try and get the truck washed off when the temp nears those temps where the salt if further activated, but most do not have heated garages. I make the point to friends of washing the vehicles, in part, based on temp swings and when salt will more be 'activated' at least a few times a year.

The point i would make though, is that other than eliminating the wind chill from being outside, i really don't see any advantage to having a vehicle outside over having it in an UNHEATED garage.

What's wind chill got to do with anything?

Simply put, the difference in temperatures between outside and being inside an unheated garage. In areas which get cold in teh winter, they often mention 'wind chill'm which refers to teh 'feels like' temperature when cold air is moving by way of wind. An outdoor temp of 2 degrees can have a 'feels like' temp of minus 20, or whatever when taking into consideration being subjected to the open air. You don't get a whole lot of 'wind chill' inside an enclosed structure.

Wind chill is only relevant to humans. Inanimate objects only know temperature and dew point.

That's why I asked what does it have to do with a truck's temperature. Wind chill is only a 'feels like' measurement and only applies to warm blooded creatures.

    Yeah, no shit.

The wind chill was tongue in cheek and had nothing to do with the main point of a an UNheated garage being a far better option than being left outside for numerous reasons. Not sure why anyone would run with the wind chill part.....

I don't know what wind chill has to do with anything either, you're the one who mentioned it. The reason being inside a structure might make a different is the relative humidity perhaps, temperature is what it is.

So I dunno what is being argued. Ultimately for how temperature and humidity affect corrosiveness of road salts you only have to refer to the NACE TM-01-69 and SAE J2334 testing to know, which I figure has been looked into by most roads departments. You have to know how badly you expect your bridges and plows to corrode to have any idea what to budget for maintenance and replacement.

If I was speculating I'd prefer all things being equal (which they are not) to store my truck in whichever environment is more dry. Iron and oxygen can't react without water. Being inside is only better if it's drier. If it's not then being warmer is worse.
