Come one, come all....

This thread is to start the discussion about creating the plug and play harness. There are some design considerations that I would like to get some feedback on from those of you interested.

Price is TBD once I settle on design and get pricing. I will not give a firm price yet, but I am confident it can be done for under $100. It should be possible to do it for under $75.

I will be making an initial batch of 20 of these and the following people have expressed interest. If you would like to be added to the list please send me a PM.

Questions:
1. Do you want truly plug and play (With everything included), or just a bare bones harness? - Seems like 100% P&P is the consensus so far.

2. I do not want to use the giant ice cube relays from Amazon. I am currently designing a PCB to house 2 smaller relays. Does this sound like a good plan?

3. If people like the aironboard.com switches, I can plan accordingly. Annoyingly, I cannot get the connector pigtail for their switch, unless someone has a source. I do not think i will include the switch due to personal preference. I will likely make provisions for easily wiring in whatever switch you want to use.

Manual truck (assuming most here are). Not sure how the sunroof guys are, but I have one extra slot in the overhead with all the other 4wd related switches that it would be most awesome to put this switch in.... i realize more work to wire, but that would be 100% ideal, if someone can figure it out. I would, and might, if I get some time.... (lol)....

I forgot there was blanks up there. That would be pretty nice to have everything together up there. I’ve got the sunroof, I think there’s a blank next to atrac - id have to go check

The wife and I are both pretty rough on jewelry. She works outside in environmental conservation, and I'm a controls engineer. If I had a normal wedding band it would be destroyed in hours.

We have titanium bands with copper and silver inlay. Had 'em for a year and they still look new.

Nearly went titanium before my jeweler told me a story of another customer who broke his ring finger with one...4 fire departments later, they found a jaws of life strong enough to cut it off. LOL

I'm in favor of a complete pnp setup.

Only place i have room for a switch is below the hvac controls. I could get my own switch or the switch you have listed.

Updated the list. Thank you for all the input guys. Looks like this is going to be more popular than I expected which is great!

It seems like the general consensus is that the aironboard switch is going to be acceptable to most people.

Is that switch the same size as the one under the HVAC controls? I can leave the wire long and leave the final cutting to length and soldering/crimping to you probably?

Cute anecdote, but it's not kryptonite. LOL! The cross section of a wedding band would be easily cut with a pair of standard bolt cutters. Next time I visit the facility that does Ti recycling I'll grab a piece of 1/4" bar and test that theory.

You're going at this from the wrong direction. Adding a hack in between the shitty 4x4 box and the actuators is a very poor solution when it would be a FAR more robust and ingenious design to simply replace the shitty 4x4 box with a couple of DC motor drivers and a microcontroller.

You are welcome to your opinion, but this is the route I and many others have chosen to take. The fact that you believe adding components (that are consumer grade at best) will make the system simpler and more reliable is curious.

If you would like to develop your solution you are welcome to do so. It will probably work fine, I just like this method.

Yep definitely TBD. I do not have pricing for the connector crimping/assembly yet and the 2+ hr labor for that is the biggest unknown. I won't be getting a price this week, but I should be able to have something in the next 2 weeks.

I plan to include (tentatively) the switch below. It is the oem style one sized to fit in the open slots below the HVAC controls. There is also the larger style to fit in an open slot to the left of the steering wheel.

Sorry thread hijack.

(So you are proposing putting truck into low gearing while the ECU thinks it is in high gear? Mind letting me know how you will work around the ECU logic that checks for a stuck 4lo sensor then? ECU monitors the wheel and engine speed to detect when the truck is actually in low gearing but the actuator feedback shows high gear.
Ref DTC p2772 and another one that is eluding me at the moment)

Note, I am not saying these issues are insurmountable, and I would applaud an elegant solution like the 2nd gen design... but put some effort into making it work on your truck... I know I did)
