Regearing a 2017 tacoma trd off road sitting 33s

    new to this can you re gear an automatic 4x4? if so what the best gearing for that and where can I get it.

    regearing is all in the differential and clamshell so yes you can. I just regeared by AT 2nd gen. For a 3rd gen you will prob hear 4.88's. A lot of people are going 5.29 for 35's. Even 4.56 would be a difference if they make a set for 3rd gens.

    not really more torque but it will rev up faster like there is. The higher the number the more over geared you will be. 5.29 will feel more than 4.88 but remember depending on the wheel/tire size your rpms will be screaming. I went 4.56 as I was not sure but wanted to do 4.88s. 4.88's with 33's form my truck would have been overkill now if I go up to a 35 I will wish I had 4.88's. for you 4.56/4.88 is like 4.88/5.29 on the 3rd gens I hear. stock is 3.73 i believe or 3.9.

    search around for a few thread and a tire calculator for finding what you want to gear it to. either way it will be an improvement. A tune on the 3rd gens will help as well.

    You regear to attempt to return the ratio to what is was before you increased the outer diameter of the tires. Theoretically, you should have a similar top speed, mechanism advantage, and similar shift points to stock if regeared properly.

    I would not want to drive a 3rd Gen on 33”s without a regear.

    I think others would be more qualified to comment than me. I’m running 31’s on my truck and notice the change from the stock 30’s. I have been thinking of going up to 33’s but realize a re-gear is a “must” in that size to maintain drivability. A good friend of mine just went to 33”s and lasted about 4 months before he got fed up and re-geared. He went 4.88. Not sure if he considered 4.56.

    I’m on 32’s and don’t notice a difference from stock, can’t imagine 33’s would feel that much more different. Unless your wheeling hard I can’t see why you’d need a regear, pointless money wasting IMO:notsure:

    I'm going to say - You shouldn't waste your money on a regear for 33's. That tire size is not big enough to make a real difference. If we were talking 35's, I would say differently.

    Unless you live at almost 7000ft elevation and ever little bit counts. I’m on skinny, but still heavy 33’s, and it’s not that big of a hit day to day driving in and around town. It’s when you get up on the mountain passes that you hop on the struggle bus. Off road, in the rocks is really where you will see the improvement.

    So we have some naysayers here as well. Interesting. I thought the 4.88 with 33”s was universally considered the right thing to do. Who is right? I’d like to hear some comments from the people who spent the money and regeared to match 33’s. Was it a waste of money?

    I’m on 33” skinny’s and there is definitely a drop in power and mileage. Overall the drivability is fine on and off-road but I will eventually swap to 4.88. Those who say they don’t notice a difference are full of shit

    C4Fab LoPro, BAMF Sliders, Ext ADS 2.5’s, 4.88's, OVTune (OG to KDMax)
    I went up to 265/70/17 and notice a difference and the manual has 4.3 vs 3.9 in the AT.

    I will go to the 4.3 gears sooner or later because that gear ratio seems to provide the best in drive ability, mpg and optimal rpms for any tire under 33”

    So I am having this internal debate with re-gearing as well. I haven't even had the lift or tires done yet. I might have a different outcome as I have the 6 speed though. Having the manual and daily driving isn't much of an issue as most of it is either cruising or stop-n-go. I looked at the tirecalc that @nudavinci64 posted above. Seems to me that even with 285's @ 65mph, I would be hitting close to 2900 rpm on the tach, but that would be done in 4th gear anyway. This is all based on being in middle GA where we have gentle hills and mostly flat ground. Feedback on Next Friday when get everything done. Just my .02

    im running 4.56 (AT not MT) with 285's right now its it not bad. MT may push it up a bit more. My buddy on 35's went 4.3 and loves it with a MT
