I make a weekly two hour highway drive where radar cruise would be awesome. But the two gear downshift to 5000 rpms are nuts. Is there any adjustments that can be made in software to allow it to lose a little speed going up hill etc rather then really aggressively try to catch up.

There's a TSB that might help, though I can't remember the exact number. Also putting it in S-mode and not letting it go all the way to 5th can help on hills.

Try using s5. Mine will hold 5th gear really well. When it does shift for a hill, it just drops 1 gear then goes back to 5th at the top. But my hills aren't mountains.

The answer is no. The cruise control is there to keep your truck at a constant speed when used. Zto do what you want, you need to drive without the cruise activated.

Mine does the same but stays in 4th, never goes back to 5th. Dealer looked at Taco and blamed lift, but it was doing it before. 10k service I’ll take it to another dealer that isn’t too lazy. I didn’t even fight this one.

While my commute is much shorter, I'm a cruise control whore. Any sort of a hill or headwind will throw it into 5th. I've never had it downshift that hard from 6th to 4th, but it's pretty flat where I'm at. After driving the truck for the first couple months, the downshifts on hills became annoying. The way the truck shifts doesn't generally bother me, I just wish it held 6th going up a small hill. I'd take the reduction in speed over having to downshift, but that's just how the truck is tuned. I'm also bone stock, OR DCSB.

Unless I'm on flat roads, I don't even put on cruise control. Not worth the hassle. With a 2 hour commute though, not being able to use cruise would be terrible. Try going S-mode and throwing it in 6 out of the driveway. With cruise activated, when you see a hill coming up, downshift to 5 at the beginning of the ascent. It may not feel the need to jerk into 4 a quarter of the way up. A little gas for motivation when cruise is on can also be helpful, just don't floor it. It'll obviously downshift, which is what you're trying to avoid.

Gotta find the sweet spot. I've just about got my commute dialed in for best gas mileage and no uphill downshifts.

This works....I went to B.C. last year, from Ont. I finally adopted this method. Causes the Tranny to go to 5th just a little bit earlier than it would on it's own. By doing this, I could make small hills in 5th and stopped the violent double down shift....

This is one just thing I really like about the MT, I can run the PA Turnpike and truck pulls all the grades in 6th without any issues with cruise on.

will have to try the S mode... and see where S5 gets me. I have a 2019 2.7 so dont think that TSB applies to me as I would hope the issue would have been fixed in mine? It is a shame there is not a setting to make it less aggressive. It there was it would be perfect. When I drive without cruise and I am coming up a hill I am sure I give it some more gas but I also dont push down hard to force the downshift. I give up a few MPH going up the hill and pick it up on the down side of the hill. Most other drivers seem to do the same.. So radar cruise is downshifting as I get to bottom of hill to maintain speed where others are backing off a bit. I end up downshifting to race up the hill only to have the radar back off anyway as I get closer to those that give up a little speed on the incline. if it could be made to allow a little speed drop off it would be perfect

I just did my first, relatively longer, drive, on the hwy with the new TRD sport, 3.5 DCSB. Drove in S mode, flat other than the occasional overpasses. Occasional downshift with cruise on at 70, way less often in S than D. Stock truck other than the bed cover. If it keeps this up, I have nothing to argue about.

Good question. People actually buy 2.7L motors? :D

I didn’t realize the OP was driving one. Oops.

In my experience, ECT does nothing for this situation. If you're in 6th gear doing 70 mph at 3000 rpm with cruise on - as soon as you hit a hill, it's going to downshift. ECT will hold gears longer when upshifting, but it does very little (if anything) in this situation to prevent the downshift.

I'd like to test this further if you think it will work, but seems like I tried this awhile back and wrote it off immediately because it did nothing.

True, it’s purpose is to hold shift points longer. However, in the cited scenario, running in S5 with ETC might be a better option than using D and letting the truck get shift happy from 4 to 6 and back.

ECT, yes I have that. I was under the impression it downshifts sooner and holds the gear lower with ECT that seems like it would be opposite of what I would want. But will give that a try also
