I was buying whatever at Walmart. I get to my Tacoma and open the pop & lock tailgate with the fob. I lay the fob on the tailgate, load the bed and close the tailgate. The keys were inside of the bed. I guess the truck relocked itself with the timer. My wife had to bring me my spare keys. I haven't carried a spare key in my wallet since I bought the truck because the spare key is so thick. I guess I'm gonna have to figure out a way to flatten the spare key so I can carry it in my wallet or go back to the old hidden magnetic keyholder that we used back in the day.

Does anyone else have any similar horror stories or solutions?

I did basically the same thing twice with my MT HKey. 2nd time that thing saved me.

I’ve done this before while fishing. I put the keys in my waders and closed the hatch. Lucky I was with my machanic buddies. They know how to brake into the truck. It’s amazing how easy it is to do.

I’ve only got a non-chipped key in mine, and it’s double ziplock bagged. That way even if somebody got into the truck they couldn’t take off with it. Had it copied at Ace

Only had the Hitch Vault on the truck since winter started, so can’t speak for the heat. Don’t think it’ll make a difference to that key though.

Your wife bringing keys to you at Walmart is a horror story? Try eating Chinese buffet and misjudging if you can make it home fast enough.

I've got a "Doors-Only" key somewhere under the truck in a magnetic box on the frame. Been doing it for years. Needed it only once, but was nice to have. Took me a few minutes to find it because I just didn't remember where I put it.

So, the truck will not unlock by grabbing the driver door handle if the fob is in the bed? I figured it would be within range. I am going to have to test this now, because I have almost been in this same situation. Was loading some mulch at Lowes, I don't have the pop n lock so I use my tailgate key, loaded up, rolled my bed cover back in place and closed the tailgate. The key was in the bed, but luckily my tailgate will not lock without using the key. I am considering the pop n lock set up, so I will definitely test this out now.

I had auto lock set to on, left keys on the seat. Went inside the strip club, came out 4hours later to a locked truck with the keys on the seat. Had to break into my topper to get my lock outset. Got into the truck and the police had shown up by then. They gave me some shit lol.

I think it's a great idea but, if you want to put the fob in it, you'd probably want to make it airtight. Maybe in a vacuum sealed bag. Then you'd either want a combo locked pin or a keyed pin lock and keep that key in your wallet.

Mine will not lock with the fob inside the vehicle. It’s something the salesman showed me at the dealership, and I’ve also tested it at home to show the wife. I have not tested the bed, just the cab.

Don't waste your time. I have "tested" the bed and, at least when the fob is by the tailgate, you can't open the door. Inside the cab is a feature. I wish it extended to the tailgate but it doesn't.
