I was gonna say it sounds like he needs to limit his top gear. the base tune is an MPG tune so getting into top gear when the engine load allows is going to be a key aspect of that. @60calHowdaHunter try s5 or wait for the mild tip in performance tune. It sounds like what you want is a sportier tune that is gonna hold that higher rpm vs the mpg tune you are running.

So far 50 miles into the 87 basic tune I'm noticing way more power on the bottom end and instead of hunting between 4th and 6th on interstate its hunting between 5th and 6th. I know I'm only half way through the settle period but anything else I should pay attention to?

I’m on 1.05 91 base at take off if I Accelerate and it gets wheel spin with traction off the truck shifts and instantly hesitated a good while the after it accelerates like crazy It was present on stock tune also it didn’t redline so I’m sure it didn’t hit fuel cut off. So idk why it does that

SSP default is level 2 which shifts to 5th at about 53 mph, same as ECT. Level 1 shifts to 5th at 48-49 mph. You can also try using ECT with the cruise control. Get to your 45mph and set cc, it will shift into 5th and shouldn't go into 6th.

THis may help. Traction control is never really off in these rigs. you can fully disable it with techstream by putting it in a test mode but thats full of fun warnings

I did the tune first and then gears. What I felt is that tune didn't help much with 35's and all of the armor. If I had to do it again, I would do the gears first because I think they help a lot more than tune. Once you go with 5.29's you might not even feel the need for tune depending on build (In my opinion).

That's what I'm thinking too. I have sliders, aluminum front, going to get a steel rear and steel skids. With 35s I think 5.29s will be enough without a tune. 33s could use a tune, but right now it's pretty livable and I still get decent mpgs (17-18).

Are you sure it’s actually shifting and not modulating the torque converter? Sometimes what feels like a shift is not actually a shift. I discovered this only after using the OBD Fusion app.

That was surprisingly helpful. I got the Sport because i only needed limited 4x4 capability a few times a year for snow but often wondered what I was missing out on by not getting the OR. The owner's manual never did a good job of explaining things and I got lost yesterday trying to understand the difference between normal TRAC and the OR/PRO A-TRAC.

I’ve got my Scangaugeii configured to display the current AT gear. This comes in handy to know that when I’m pressing the gas and the revs increase (feels like a downshift) it stays in the top gear (it happens most often with 4th gear in city driving).

Just completed the Texas triangle this weekend. Wow what a difference from starting at 1.03 to 1.05 87 base. I averaged about 16 miles to the gallon with going about 80 mph. Lift, 295/75/16, bumper winch, camper shell and all the crap in the bed. Honestly, the best update to date especially with the transmission not dancing on the hills. @OVTune thanks for making these trips easier to take again.

I mean I'm fairly certain but no expert. I see the rpms jump from 1400 to 2000. I'm assuming its downshifting from 6th to 5th

Depending on the gear it can be just the converter making this jump.

I have a bds lift with 20x12s and 33/12.5 Toyo MTs. I do a 50 mile round trip to work that’s mostly interstate and highway. I’m not worried about the power, it has plenty for me on the bottom. But on the interstate I get up to 70-75mph then the truck drops down to 5th or 6th and starts slowing down if I’m not paying attention to it. Is this something that the tune will help with or do I need gears? It’s not terrible but annoying. I just want a little more power in my highway gears. But I don’t want to mess up my mpgs or run 93 oct. I would run 87 base permanently I’m sure.

Btw, don’t be too harsh on me. I know the drop bracket lifts and 12 wides are frowned upon on TW

Has anyone ran both 91 base and 91 performance? I'm currently on 91 base with 350 miles and it's pretty decent however I'm thinking of trying out the 91 performance but also don't want to kill my MPG although I'm not sure how big of a difference it will make. I drive a lot of highway if that makes any difference.

Why not just give it a shot and see? Maybe you'll get less fuel economy but find that your smiles per gallon increase. If you really can't afford a possible mpg hit on a couple tanks of fuel while testing out the performance map, then you probably shouldn't have a brand new-ish Tacoma either, no doubt with a decent sized monthly loan payment.

I'm going to assume you can afford it, so just have fun with it and check it out. Either it ends up being something you like and the mileage works out for you, or it doesn't

Had 93 base then went to 93 performance. Tip in is a little bit too much but my truck loves the peformance tune so im not complaining. A few cold misfires but no warm misfires. Truck feels alot more powerful you can feel the extra 40hp. Downshifts early sometimes but my truck feels strong and happy. Not gonna let my girl drive it til release of performance with less of tip in tho haha
