I think the general consensus on the forum and from stuff I've read in articles online is that the new beefed up 8.75" axle is used in the TRD Off-road only.

I was browsing on something unrelated and I found this posted in a thread. If the data is correct from toyota it shows the 4 cylinder with 4wd in manual has the new big axle and not the 8" T100/tundra/8.4"/8.25"(a lot of nick names) that non e-locker tacomas have been using since 05. The 2nd gens with e-locker used the 8" v6 but thats a different story.

I was trying to confirm gear ratio when I found this and noticed the 8.8" measurement.

Some research shows the BD22AN is the new 8.75" axle with the e-locker used in the TRD-OR and the BD22A is the open version which this data sheet suggests is being used in a specific trim.

I couldn't find more info, and most likely tomorrow I will see if I can get any info out of toyota. I've been putting serious consideration in regearing and if I had not stumbled upon this I may have ordered the incorrect ones.

It also yields an issue of gears not existing yet for the new axle so it will have to be post poned. Just figured I'd bring this up in case someone else like me was about to drop cash on gears or maybe someone has more info?

I almost bought an ARB for the rear end a couple months ago in a group buy and I've been regretting not getting it up until now. Feel very relieved as it would have been a money loser.

Yesterday I ordered 4.88 gears for my 4-Banger Manual from ECGS. They told me the for certain way to tell what diff your have, 8" or 8.75" is to check the nuts that bolt the 3rd member down. If they take a 14mm socket then it is the 8.75", if they take a 12mm socket it's the 8". Looks like all manual transmission vehicles have the larger axle including all OR models as stated above. Also, only locker option for the 8.75" is an ARB, but I ain't drooping $1,000 on one.

I'll update when my gears come in, but looking at the axle it does look much larger than the mini truck axle of the 80's and 90's.

Long story short I did figure out that locker tacomas and manual tacomas have the new 8.75. been running the 4.88s for 2 years now. Pretty happy with the decision.

So all the manual trans trucks have the 8.75? Regardless of 2 or 4wd? I'm thinking of picking one up to swap into a 2nd Gen and I need to know what to be calling junk yards in search of

I don't know about 2wd but 4wd yes. Imo I would keep the 2nd gen rear end. You can find used lockers and stuff much more readily than the new axle. Unless you're running big ass tires and you've blown up a 8.4

My rear housing will be for sale in a couple of months (3rd member not included). The axle is already prepped for 63's too.

8.8" isn't really a beefier axle. Just slightly bigger ring gear. Axle shafts are still the same 30 spline six luggers all 05+ trucks use

Kinda need the third. Rather find a non elocker and add and ARB anyyhow.
I'm running 37s and I've blown an elocker rear when I was still on 33s. Ring and pinion is the same size on the 8.4 as the "8.0" elocker rear so I'm trying to find a more substantial upgrade then that without going to a Dana 60 or the like.

Thats actually perfect for 2 reasons. One the ring and pinion is what normally gives, so thats beefed up. And 2 that means chromoly shafts are already available for it. Win win.

If the elocker plug was the same it would be perfect and I'd pick up an elocked model, but I doubt it is at which point and ARB makes more sense to me. Can anyone confirm the the 3rd gen elocker plug is different than the 2nd gens?

It's definitely not the same and full of fucking safety nannies!
There's a thread in the third gen section where a guy with a manual TRD sport is installing the factory elocker and it's a clusterfuck. So far he had no luck getting it sorted.

I figured something like that. I'll source an non-locked rear and ARB it.

Just curious, why not go with a Dana 60 right off the bat?

Yes it’s true, the base model SR four-cylinder, five-speed has the same size ring and pinion as big beefy rear in the TRD pro.

To much work, too much money, not enough clearance under the diff bunch of other reasons.

I'm thinking this is the right balance for me of those things. Should be a pretty straight swap, I'm pretty sure all the brakes and wheel sensors will be the same. Get a little stronger 3rd with a locker that actually engages when I hit the button.

Keep in mind the Dana 60 from Dynatrac is $4k without gears, locker, wheel bearings,, brakes, studs ect. Its probably safe to say it's $7000 by the time its under a truck. And thats for a semifloat 60. Not even full float.

I've got a disc braked 14 bolt with 4.88s under a truck I'm parting out, and an ARB, that I could use if strength was the only issue. But I'm looking for a balance between a lot of factors that I THINK the 3rd gen 8.75 would fill.

    Make sense?
