Aftermarket Windshield Washer Reservoir finally available

I know it's not a 1st Gen Tacoma unless the reservoir neck is cracked, split, or completely busted, but I see now where there is finally an aftermarket reservoir available!
Still not cheap (approx. $60) but better than the OEM Retail.

I could use one of those, mine is cracked and only holds 50% fluid. Plus the wiper light stays on.

 

are you sure this one will hold up long term? I was thinking about switching to the smaller one that sits behind the airbox. I saw the "proper" design one on Amazon but, I'm hesitant about it cracking and failing again.

 

Must be how you use your trucks mine is fine so far.

I'm looking at these direct replacement tanks again, this time on ebay... is there a difference between cold weather package and not?

Also there are some that have the hole for the sensor already.

 

My '03 doesn't have the sensor. I "believe" the cold weather package was for Canada.

 

I remember reading something about cold weather package having to do with a little liner that goes onto the outside of the washer tank so it isn't exposed to road grime and stuff. My truck has this liner. I don't know if there are any physical differences in the washer tank itself though.

 

According to the parts diagram, the washer tank with the filler neck is a "cold weather" model, while the smaller one (similar or same as the one I linked) is the "standard" one.

I guess that means that any of these listings that say the washer tank is "not cold weather" means they don't know what they're talking about, or they listed the incorrect picture, or some other small detail is different and I'm not sure which. The tank itself is still cold weather spec if it is the kind with the filler neck.

After looking on ebay each different part number, both of the above part numbers are the "filler neck" kind, but "060" has the low fluid sensor hole, while "050" does not. So I guess that's the difference.

Pro tip, search ebay with your proper part number but REMOVE the dash in the middle (example search: 8531504060 instead of 85315-04060), then you will see the cheaper options pop up when sorting by lowest price.

 

Years ago (around 2008 or so) my washer fluid tank disintegrated (it was the "cold weather" with the neck but truck was in California, not exactly the coldest part of the world). Dealer did not have sensor-less tank, they told me it was discontinued (maybe they wanted to sell me the sensor too to plug the hole). I plugged the hole with home made plug (custom work in derlin rod on my lathe) that actually holds till this day. But it's good to know that I can buy sensor-less tank again if the one I have gives up again.

 

Cheapest washer tank (with sensor hole) is on Amazon now, search the part numbers (remove hyphen) and sort by price low to high. $53

 

I bought the washer tank that is similar to the op’s first post on eBay. Mine didn’t come with a washer pump, but I did wish I had gone ahead and bought the factory one. The filler neck doesn’t fit tight enough and you can move it around pretty easily. I ended up strapping the top of the filler neck to the air filter box bracket. The cap won’t fit over the factory drop in filter screen, and I had to reuse my old washer pump grommet, because the one it came with leaked. I got it to work, but if I had it to do again, I’d just buy the damn oem part.

 

I just ordered the same one (but with the sensor hole) for $52. FWIW I am planning on swapping all the grommets and the pump from the old tank to the new. I am also probably going to seal the neck insert area with RTV. I don't trust it and the OEM design doesn't have the filler neck as a separate piece. But, who's to say the OEM one won't disentegrate again? Not worth the $110+ gamble IMO.

 

I agree with you. That’s the same reason that I bought the one I did. I actually thought about fiberglassing my factory unit back together and reinforcing it. It’s too easy to spend the money. Haha! Good luck! In the end, I’m happy with my washer tank, it was just more work than I expected, that’s all.

 

I don't doubt it, I'm expecting to break a few clips along the way.

 

This is a picture of how I strapped it to the airbox frame. I used a metal clamp with a small spacer to drop it down to where it fits. I also used riv nuts and machine screws, so no nut to hold with a wrench if I wanna unhook it for services or whatever.

 

Does the aftermarket one come with the sponge/float thing in it?

 

I just got a reservoir for one of the earlier gen tacomas, like a 98/99 I think. I was getting a new low profile bumper and needed to move it anyway. I got one off Amazon for like $30. It didn't have the hole for the level sensor, so I just used a step bit and drilled a new hole on the bottom and used the factory pump/wiring. It's capacity is smaller, but not by much.

It bolted right up. The ABS assembly bracket was slightly in the way, so I hammered the bracket a little bit (only needed to move a few mm) then drilled a new hole and used a riv-nut to remount the bracket.

Worked like a charm.
