I finally hate California. Grew up here in the east SF bay in Alameda, a then small island town with tons of open space, train yards, ports etc. As kids we could go out and do normal boy stuff like throw rocks, climb on trains and hop them for short distances. We had a camping spot, called “the spot” out on the estuary where we’d built shacks out of scavenged plywood and pallets. Had bonfires, stashed boxes of MRE’s etc back there. Batteries, boomboxes, flashlights firewood, dirty mattresses - all the stuff needed for a good time with a minimized risk of any real damage. We’d bring girls around, make out, smoke cigs and other stuff, drink 40s of Mickey’s and Old E. Sometimes we’d stay all night. A few times one of my friends brought his dad’s .22 rifle and we’d just pass it around plinking cans and bottles. This was all 7th and 8th grade. Our parents didn’t get overly worried about us and for the most part we turned out fine. I own two houses, haven’t had a boss in almost 20 years etc. Another buddy went on to be a bull rider and came in 7th place in the state a few years back.

Kids can’t do this stuff anymore. I feel for my son - he’s an active kid who will need that kind of space and experience or he might wind up in real trouble. Scratching my head. Really trying to get out of CA, hopefully Utah but my wife is stubborn about moving.

I just spent an hour reading the Dahmer story on Wikipedia thanks to this meme....never really knew much about it other than that he was a serial killer/cannibal. Holy shit. I do remember being nearly 10 years old when he died in prison and my mom and dad being pretty happy about that.

Kinda wish I hadn't read any of that now, lol.
