I actually just had this conversation with someone just last week as their son started driving and got his permit. Monthly insurance cost was quoted as "car payment" range and this was for a 2012 Corolla.

That's a really good point. When I was a kid and got my permit, my agreement with my folks was they would buy the truck and put me on the loan, but I had to work and pay the insurance. It was a good tradeoff as it got me to work at an early age. In retrospect I think they just wanted me in a safe car because I drove 80 mi a day in Alaska.

That said, when I bought my first Tacoma in 1998 with the first time buyer discount and a 760 credit score I got intro tier A rates making it super cheap. It just set up a cascade of finance opportunities that a bunch of my friends didnt have coming out of school.

I seem to recall there was some program through state farm where my dad was primary and I was listed as a driver or something.

We're talking SoCal rates here. We're always in the top 10 highest.

I heard recently from a friend that her 20 year old sister was paying $400 a month in full coverage insurance here in SoCal, with one accident on record. Crazy.

    Lights for days! Sasquachified!
Sounds about right. My younger sister is around that age and is close to that (without an accident)! It's ludicrous

Speaking from the experience of a 21yr old on his 3rd vehicle go with a cheap one first!!! First Car (Jeep Grand Cherokee 1997 4wd at 273k miles) totaled completely, only cost me 1200 to begin with and I got around 600 for parts and scrap and it lasted me till 17. Second car was my 98 sr5 v6 2wd 4runner (currently owned by roommate) thing is a tank he just rolled over 205k miles in it (Bought with 160k from OG owner) needed to get a real vehicle for life/work though. Always had ZERO ISSUES with the 4runner in 6 years. New tacoma is amazing but imagine that new car smashed after a year... Save money go cheap let them make the mistake first not you and the pocketbook with a new car!

To the guys talking about new cars for a 16 year old, Getoutta here.

Unless you're buying it cash for your child and paying their insurance I can't see any upside. - Just the depreciation alone the child can't afford. Let an old car nickle and dime them. At 16 they're not driving anywhere super far where they need to worry about being stranded. Get them a job where they can afford the occasional $200 starter or $400 compressor. Buy them tires for christmas and have ol drunk uncle tom change their oil.

Im a member of the boat club myself. Something big, older and safe. Crown Vic comes to mind. Sounds cool with the V8, Decent enough mileage, cheap parts and insurance.

There are plenty of good full sized sedans as well. Mileage will take a hit but an Accord is more usable and comfortable than a Civic.

Valid points, but unless the 16 yr old is working to make the payments and if they're like a typical millennial, they generally won't appreciate a new vehicle since they have no vested interest in it other than getting the keys. As such, the interior will be treated like their room ( a virtual garbage can ) and it won't be maintained because they won't have accountability for it. I'm not saying that @ohnohbabywhatisudoin 's God Sister isn't responsible ( I know nothing about her ), so I'm speaking in general terms. Everyone should get a hand-me-down/used vehicle as their first vehicle unless they're able to buy it themselves.

I had a similar agreement with my parents when they bought me my '76 Chevy Nova.

Yup and I can't wait to retire out of the frigg'n over regulated state. Companies and people are leaving by the droves and the only way Sacramento can keep up their level of insane spending is to find more ways to tax those that are still here.

My former coworker is still driving a 1990 Corolla. It burns a quart of oil every month, but he says $5 a month in oil beats a car payment.

I think it's an unspoken rule that threads need to be derailed by the 5th reply at the latest

I have a 1998 Civic as my daily and absolutely love it. I keep my overpriced vehicles at home and because I insure my 98 as my primary vehicle, I save on my insurance on both my Tacomas and 17" TLX (Wife).
