Best motor oil choice

Hi All,

I did a search and didn't find much, but sorry if this is a repeat....

What is the best oil (weight and brand) for 3rd gens? Is there one that is widely agreed upon? For example, in my current truck, a '96 land cruiser, most agree that Rotella T4 is best. The engine runs smoother with it and burns less of it.

When I owned a 2004 4runner, I ran 5w-30 mobil one or amsoil. BUT, I lived in MN at the time and I now live in WA.

Synthetic 0W-20, change ever 5k-10k. Doesn't matter what you run too much since it's not a race car.

LOL, use mobile 1 from Walmart unless you want to use Amsoil then you can boast about it like a vegan! Use the oem filters or a wix or Napa gold (wix). I used mobile 1 in my wife's 4runner for 106k and it was always clean when I changed it every 5k. I use Amsoil in my Tacoma because I like free stickers, paying 5 times more for my oil and boasting about it like a vegan db!

 

You’ll need a tool too to remove the oil filter cap/housing. I recommend this. I used it for my first oil change at 30k miles. It comes with an OEM filter too.

I switched from Castrol after using it for 60k miles. Now using Valvoline.

 

Thank you! I have a spanner wrench version of a filter removal tool. Super helpful. I'll see if I can use that, if it doesn't fit, I'll get the "socket" version you recommend. I'll probably continue to use WIX filters, I've used them on a few different vehicles.

 

I recommend reading through here. It prompted me to spend the few extra dollars on OEM versus others. Just food for thought!

0W-20.... I use Mobil, but wouldn't shy away from some of the others. I'd stay away from Quakerstate.

 

Check your owners manual and see what temperasure range you are in. The factory makes recommendations based on the environment that you live in.
For oil I stay away from the no name stuff. Just for piece of mind. But the big names all make great products. I think it's hard to make a bad choice that will damage your engine. Just get the right viscosity.

 

I just ordered/used 6 quarts of the Amazon stuff for 19 bucks.

Like others have said, it’s not a race car. High performance cars would never use 0w20 anyway.

 

Pennzoil usually has $10 online rebate on 5qt synthetic... Makes it cheaper than most other oils.
$22 at Walmart minus the $10 rebate. It's my go to oil when there's rebates.
