Nice 4Runner. I had a 2009 and traded it in on a 2012 Prerunner. I teetered on getting a new 4R this last go-round but I really like and appreciate the tech offered on the current Tacomas which is sorely lacking on the current crop of 4R. I'll visit that again when they get a refresh or maybe look at the Lexus if I hit the lotto.

Damn, I'm trying to convince the wife she needs to trade the Subaru for a 4R. She mostly doesn't care as long as it's 4wd/awd and red, can I barrow the picture?

It's only my opinion but Toyota is starting to lose there legendary status been hearing lots of problems and recalls from others also they just don't make them like they use to that's why I stick to the classic toys vehicles are to costly nowadays to have so many issues and problems I will keep my classics and keep buying restoring and rebuilding they are worth it

Are there any other documented transfer case failures, or are we calling this one a fluke?

They say what failed in the transfer? Not seeing anything worth replacing the whole thing over.

    Here's one:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/truck-stuck-in-4-lo.594223/

    AND:

At 11,000 miles I had a transfer case failure with my 2017 TRD Off Road. I was off roading and when I stopped I was switching from 4-High to two wheel drive. I heard a loud clunk, and the vehicle was stuck in four wheel drive / 4-High. The four wheel drive light on the dash continually flashed.

A dealership had to replace the actuator and two internal shift forks. Below is a "cut and paste" from my online service records.................

SUSPENSION/STEERING ~|~CUSTOMER STATES STUCK IN 4X4 MODE. PLEASE CHECK AND ADVISE ~|~CONFIRMED 4X4 LIGHT FLASHING TRACED TO TRANSFER CASE INTERNAL FAILURE. ~|~REMOVED, REPAIRED AND REASSEMBLED TRANSFER CASE AND RE INSTALLED. TEST DROVE GOOD

Clazzio leather interior, audio/head upgrades, new frame, 5100's,
I work for Toyota and drive a Tacoma myself. I'm more concerned about the 2 tsb's and potential torque converter and software updates? Guess it's too little too late (grats on the upgrade!)
Wondering if a reputable dealer might have done something for you.. I bet we would have. We're not all "stealerships" and between warranty enhancement, goodwill and outright "take it on the chin" I don't personally think I've ever let a fellow taco owner "pay what's due" ...

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
Nice looking 4runner! @Dirty Harry I never thought I'd like the 4runner in red, but my neighbor got one and I must say it is stunning. I also have an 07 4runner and agree TW is the best resource for many 4runner issues as well.

Nice 4runner! Is that an inferno red (kinda orange) or is that just the lighting? That color looks sick
