Will second the RCI products. Have their Skids, Sliders, and rack. Only complaint it their sliders are a bit short for my liking, but that's personal preference. Can't beat the local pickup either.

The thing with the sliders is 3rd gen frames are split. Some of the earlier 3rd gens used 2nd gen frames, so mounting points for sliders are not all the same since RCI developed their sliders for 3rd gens off the "2nd gen" frame that most early 3rd gens had. You will most likely have to drill your frame if you get RCI sliders to be able to use all the mounting points. @YamaDirtrider and I have been planning to drill my frame but just waiting on the right time and a mag drill.

I'd also get your exhaust reroute before you buy your skids. I didn't and regret it since my stock exhaust skids drags on almost everything since it sits so much lower than a reroute would.

Will also second the steel, IMO, better to go aluminum on a bumper where you won't take as many hits with casual wheeling. Also IMO, Skids/sliders that protect the important stuff should be as strong as possible, so steel.

 

In steamboat for a couple days. Any recommendations on places go eat or brewery's?

 

My buddy owns the Barley, so I'm a bit biased... Its a great place and solid selection.

 

Plus he just sold his Jeep and bought a 2015 Tacoma.

I'm partial to Budbuilt armor, mostly because thats what I bought. Their skids don't require a re-route. You won't be able to do local pickup with them, so what you save in the cost of a re-route might come out in the wash when you factor in the cost of shipping

Barley is a great beer bar. Storm peak brewery, how ya doin pizza (next door to each other), Low country kitchen for a nice meal (I work there a couple nights a week - it’s great southern style cooking), hit up the happy hours - I like salt and lime, mambo, and steamboat smokehouse. If you are skiing, T-Bar is a great apres ski spot. Lots of great restaurants here!!

 

I didnt realize Budbuilt was still around. I had one of his raised crossmember skid plates on my other truck 15 years ago or more. Glad to see the guy is still kicking stuff out.

 

Just curious, any tips on how to tell if mine is one of the reused 2nd gen frames? Purchased end of May 2016.

I am a huge fan of steel on my '93 YJ. While it is a bit heavier it does withstand the test of time (and trail carnage)...

Thanks for the tip on the exhaust re-route. Will have to look into that as well.

I'm all about buying locally. Especially with local pickup and to meet the folks at RCI.

Theyre nice folks up there. I didnt go back too far but if someone suggested doing the reroute before buying skids and then replacing the non rerouted skid after you do, then that was a brilliant suggestion worth about $300. If not, may I make the brilliant suggestion myself so you dont have to buy both versions like I did.

Either way, RCI is good and theyre good folks too.

 

I see Alec did beat me to it. I bought the non rerouted skid and beat the t total shit out of it before my lift. After lift and reroute, I hardly have a scratch on the new one. Maybe because all the damn rocks are covered in snow and ice right now.

 

Hardest puzzle in the fucking world. I really dont know what i would do without a second vehicle this shit is gonna take weeks.
