If i can throw in on your tent talk a little. I've got one of the Napier truck bed tents. I've used it a couple times, and it's not terrible. Once you get used to setting it up, it's not that hard. You will need some kind of air mattress for the truck bed. A sleeping bag isn't enough cushion and those ridges in the need bed are hard af to sleep on.

The only downside to it is that you have to unload everything out of your truck bed (if your carrying gear back there) in order to set up camp.

 

Go the topper route or softopper if you want to save a little coin. I have a RTT and trailer and would rather just sleep under my topper if I had a long bed. RTTs are overrated IMHO. They go up really fast but takedown still takes some time and a full setup takes considerable time. Checkout @fatfurious2 hardshell out. I assume they go up and down really fast.

Alright Roberto, I've given this a read and I'll offer my two abes on this...

I think RTT's are more of a novelty in my opinion. I bought one and never unboxed it and ended up returning it because I realized that I didnt need it for camping comfortably. You really just need to decide what you really want to do and what you are actually going to do. Setting up a RTT anchors your truck to wherever you are. You have to set up/takedown/setup/takedown anytime you want to go mobile. Again it depends on how you camp and what your ideal outting is about. A trailer is great for dropping a base camp but can be a ball and chain for certain trails if you are trying to get into the wilderness and camp. Truck caps are great for sleeping in the bed but you gotta remember how much space youre going to have in there. It reminds me of my days on the USS Gravely sleeping in a coffin rack. Not a lot of space and not a lot of airflow. Sure you can open the windows on them (If they have them) but if its raining they have to stay closed and it can get steamy and stagnant quick in the warmer months. Also depending on how much gear you have in there, you have to remove it and Ground tents are well.... ground tents. Old reliable, people have been doing it for centuries and theres nothing wrong with it.

I prefer hammock camping myself but that can be challenging in the cold months and can be miserable with rain.

I say you go with the Cap and bring a ground tent. Because it multifunctioning as dry storage and a backup if it's monsooning but you can always set up your ground tent if it isnt.

 

Thank you! Very insightful. I think when you say Topper you mean "Softopper" cap, like a Beestop? If so, yea, not even a consideration. I like the look, and the price is right but they have too many inadequacies for me to want to deal with. For one, if the plastic windows get too cold they can crack. And like you said, not dust or, without some effort, water proof.

Yea, I'd like to go the trailer route but I'm sure you'll use yours 10x more in a year than I ever would.

I probably should have mentioned that I have two instant up canopies. One is a smaller 8x8 square and the other is a 13x7 pentagon. I plan on taking at least one of these for chillin' under and to store gear under when the weather is bad.

I guess another thing I need to consider is when do you set up camp? Do you do it first then wheel/explore or after? If it's before then I'll need to unload the truck then I'd think.

After seeing the Gazelle tent I could change my mind about tent sleeping. I'm going to check them out. See how waterproof they are.

No I mean hard shell. It's a local lingo thing. Some call them caps, toppers, shells, etc

 

One of the guys down here has the 3 person and really likes it he's had it out quite a bit and it's good and waterproof. Trust me when I say I vet my gear before buying. Oh that tent you linked wayyyyyy to big, get something smaller that is easier to set up. I've got a couple of Cabela's tents they are good. I have the west wind 4 person. Just remember setting up a traditional pole style tent like that the bigger they get the more cumbersome they are.

As far as when I set up camp depends on what I am doing if I go to an offroad park the truck gets emptied before the first trail. There is some camping spots where it is mild offroading getting to the camp site. But typically for anything I like camp wet up before I go and do anything else.

Take the advice from @Comatose on sleeping under a cap, shell, topper watever you wanna call it. I didn't much enjoy it either.

I always bring a canopy or pop up tarp (as I call them) they are useful and work as a gathering spot, garage, kitchen, etc.

You see how fast I am moving on this trailer. My current system with a ground tent and stuff is working just fine. I would rather increase that comfort and style of camping before making the trailer. Plus so many other things to do and spend money on something that I view as complete luxury.
