What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I tried going into 4wd this morning at like 15 mph, let off the gas, pulled the j shift, and boof

 

I have a 7.5 clamshell housing I don't need. Only down side is its got a cut out for arb locker hose.

Probably something not fine, maybe I’ll take it apart when I find a donor.

Shouldn’t be too hard I hope.

 

A locker would be neat haha, but I better just find a complete diff

 

All tacoma elockers are 4.10

so..you aren't running a skid?

Did it lock up as well? or just a loud noise?

 

Yes I’m running the factory skid, I’d imagine it tried to lock up.

I mean as in when it went bang did it kill the motor and instantly lock up and stop you? As in you can't drive anymore. Or just bam. Wtf was that and get out and see it?

 

Oh no, I drove home, went bang, got out, saw some shit, turned around and come home.

Oh, it definitely was a smooth loud noise, there was a jolt.
Mines better baking a noise for longer than I want to admit, thought it was a cv axle, I’m sure that had something to do with it.

The diff went nuclear as the photo above showed. Sucked the pinion into the carrier.

 

I replaced my sister-in-law's walks a few years ago. Did from the house to the front side walk doing it the way you describe, for the front walk, I had a load delivered. About equal amounts of sidewalk for each. unbelievable amount more work to do by hand, and the quality of the finished work was not as good, and even now years later, the by hand is much inferior, hasn't held up as well. There's a reason the pros have it delivered, and as I recall the cost was not hugely different.

 

When's the last time you changed the gear oil in the front diff? If it was too low, dirty, contaminated, worn, etc. that could do it.

Only asking because you're always saying that maintenance is too expensive lol

 

The chance of it gernading cause of old diff oil is real low imo. Most people outside of this forum dont even know theres oil that needs changed other than the motor oil. Id bet a lot of older vehicles are still rocking their original gear oil. I dont think my 92 has ever had the front changed. The rear was only changed cause an axle seal blew. Maybe one day Ill get around to changing it.

 

Yeah I work with a few people that think their cars don't need anything other than gasoline and even then, they only realize that when it's running on fumes. I dunno just trying to think of what might cause such a catastrophic failure outside of abuse (like spinning the tires when stuck)...if it just blew up on him after putting it into 4wd I imagine its been a ticking time bomb for awhile now so maybe something else triggered the damage awhile ago and it just now got to it's breaking point.

Call me crazy but I change all gear oil out every 20/25k... not very expensive, easy to do and above all it's worth the peace of mind

edit: I take that back, manual trans I push to ~40k because Redline MT90 is expensive lol.
