Chambered mufflers like flowmasters don't really work great on small displacement engines because of how they try to alter the sound, you end up with a hollow sounding drone and raspy high end.

You're likely after the sound of a straight through fiberglass packed type muffler. With an auto behind the 2.7 I'd probably want something like a larger dynomax ultra-flo. (20ish inches), would quiet it down significantly even from a 40 or 50 series flowmaster and give it a nice smooth tone. If you wanted it louder a straight through baffle-less magnaflow in the same size or something smaller like a borla or thrush super turbo would be something to look into.

Underfire, I like your idea. I found a hole in my Flowmaster (after 17 years) and decided to replace it with a Dynomax Ultra-Flo that was just over 20" long and has a 2 1/2" inlet and outlet. Summit dropped it off yesterday and today I had it installed. It sounds great. It is much quieter than the FM and does not have that hollow sound. A complete exhaust overhaul will be a project for later. Thanks for the help guys!

Glad I could help, I went with the same setup on my 3.4 powered truck when I noticed a few holes in the stock muffler, wanted to keep the volume down since the V6's sound like garbage when they're loud.

I don't mind a louder sound with the 4 bangers though, likely gonna replace the 18" baffled magnaflow with something a little louder on my 4Runner.

Anything louder than stock gets annoying fast, not to mention if you're and early to work person it's also annoying to your neighbors.

It's been 17 years since I have heard what my truck sounds like with the stock muffler. I have been putting up with the noise of the Flowmaster that long. However, with only 80,000 miles on the truck, it does spend a lot of time parked in the garage. I just haven't had the notion to change the muffler out. The new muffler does sound very good. I can't imagine it being much louder than stock and certainly not not loud enough to create an issue with the neighbors.

Lovin what I'm seein/reading, on point! I put in MBRP CatBack TurnDown, love it, have another exhaust leak to tend to though so no sing-song yet...ordering the Thorleys tomorrow. Couple newb questions: Any pointers/vids on removing/replacing headers? Praying not to crack a bolt.. Titanium exhaust wrap? And lastly after header install, will adding the stock pipe after muffler instead of turn down quiet things down a bit?

If you're ordering the same header as mine from Doug Thorley , there's no need for exh wrap . The header comes high temp nickle coated inside and outside. This means there's little to no heat transfer coming off the header . This allows for a much cooler engine compartment

Still looks that good after 3 years !!!

Sure does Chuck! Thanks for that! It looks like there are 2 similar part #'s but fairly certain they are in fact different and not just typos THY-511Y-1-C and THY-511-C, the former being yours but listing says ceramic coated. I just put in an offer on ebay for it. Did you replace that cat? I'm in NY so good ole emissions for me...!

Yes I'm running the Calif CARB compliant # THY-511Y-1-C and its a ceramic coating with a nickel finish

I had performance muffler shop install mine and being at that time the mileage was only 57k original miles so the cat was in excellent shape

By mistake I ordered the # THY-511-C header and It had the same coating as the correct header that's on my motor

You'll like this header as it's a TRI Y design meaning cyl's #1-3 share a merge collector and cyl's #2-4 share the other and this design helps build low end torque

@pc24 I forgot to mention the header flange gasket that comes with the header will seal against the cyl head exhaust ports with no issues . The muffler shop that installed the header did recommended for a better set up would be by using the OEM exhaust manifold gasket and that is what I did !!

This OEM gasket is much thicker and better than the Doug Thorley supplied gasket and seals much better . So I would if I were you is get the OEM exhaust manifold gasket from your local parts store

Uhh  it's a Ceramic coated Nickle finish , not chrome . It will last much longer than a uncoated crack prone small Primary tube OEM exh manifold !! . Also a ceramic coated header will drastically reduce under hood temps !!!!!

And the Doug Thorley header is a true TRI Y Design with larger Primary tubes and merge collectors . I'm running a supercharger and this header helps scavenge exh gasses and stops reversion which makes more torque down low in rpm band

What is a TRI Y header you ask ...... read here

    I picked up the MBRP
XP S5332409 Cat-Back 2.5 in, very well made though included gasket seal was the wrong one (nobiggie). Otherwise, well worth the $. Built well, nice look, sound rich/deep.... but not getting the true sound, flow: I have leaks further up so I'm looking to replace the rest of the system Honestly, my main objective..not having to replace the sh^t stock aluminized rot-in 2yrs muffler. Anyone have suggestions on headers/cat? I've been lookin at these Doug Thorley headers.. never replaced headers so tryna cover all the bases..front 2 back baby:muscleflexing:

UPDATE: So I had the thorley headers put in to go along with the MBRP catback muffler. So right now exhaust ends at the muffler with tailpipe ending before the rear tires.... It is loud, but I'm certain I should have new hangers welded on in order to put the stock tailpipe on. How will this affect the loudness? I only got this muffler only for the stainless steel aspect and replacing sh't stock rot-away. My performance overall seems shit still... Should I go ahead and have the stock tailpipe put in (weld in new hangers)? I just want the power back and lower the volume! Thanks fellas and happy holidays

dump it down behind your rear axle regardless of the muffler. Do not cut it close to the cab bc the drone will kill you on highways lmao. When I had mine cut off under the cab I had to crank the radio. Much better with the glasspack and rear axle dump. Almost no cab noise yet loud af on the outside

I still have my el cheapo Pacesetter on the 3rz - used to live 3 miles from their factory. Still good after 13 years, and sounds like you say. The only thing I had to change was the enclosed collector gasket; I replaced it with an aluminum part available from any speed shop and many parts stores.
