Warning to Third Gen. Users of the 2nd Gen. 5100's!

Replace the one that's bad, shocks fail. It may, or may not happen again.

 

So, all this fuss over a $50 shock?

 

Are 3rd gens not 1" higher in front because of new spring? Maybe 3rd gen 5100s are bit longer ?

 

I searched other forums and found the contact information for the Bilstein Warranty Supervisor, Lisa Ciacci. I sent her an email and she initially offered to replace the one strut under warranty, however, all of the 3rd generation struts were spoken for, so she offered me a 2nd generation. I countered by asking for a 3rd gen, when they come available, and I'd buy a second at cost. She said that was not possible because that facility does not sell to the public.

To get what I wanted I had to change my approach and let her know that this was not a warranty issue, but rather about customer service and correcting what went wrong. After laying out my case, I told her I wanted both the struts and the shocks replaced with the correct ones. She finally agreed to replace both struts with the current model. She said the 2nd generation rears are the correct ones for the 3rd generation, so they were not replaced.

Needless to say, I am happy with the outcome. I realize it is her job to minimize the company's losses, while still providing good CS, but I just wish she would have made that final offer first.

 

That's why I just went with the TRD PRO shocks when they were an insane discount.

 

You were owed one 2nd gen strut under warranty, but wouldn’t let it go untill you got more than you deserved, you should be more than happy, and less entitled.

 

You put the wrong part on your truck and it failed, and you want them to pay for your mistake

 

3rd gen specific 5100s have been out since before he did his suspension.

 

Do you really believe they would cave in to the demands of a customer for no reason? Get real! I was initially told I did not have a warranty claim and was dismissed. They only changed their stance once the facts came out.

Get your “facts” straight if you’re going to criticize others:
June 16th: the "official" release from Bilstein came out that the Gen 2 5100's were the correct model for the 2016 Tacoma….
June 17th: I purchased the struts and shocks.
June 22: Bilstein website changed and the page that listed the 24-239370 (front) as the correct fitment for the 2016 Tacoma was no longer available.

So the manufacturer puts out bad information that I acted on, and now it is my mistake?

I doubt they would have given me anything if I had bought them after the 22nd.

What is the relevance? The fact is, I bought the Bilsteins in 2016, before the 3rd gen 5100s came out.

the couple of days headache to deal with this vs 120 bucks to replace both would not have been worth it to me. I'm glad you got the outcome you wanted.

It’s pretty simple really, you bought the wrong struts taking the advice of people on a forum... and it’s Bilsteins Fault? You KNEW they were going to be possibly updated for the 2016 by Bilstein before you bought them, and you waited several weeks after they removed the compatibility information to install them. It’s pretty obvious you were just careless and pretended to be a innocent victim to get free shit. People like you are partly why the prices of things go up every year.

No they owed him 2 new struts that are the correct ones for his vehicle. He did his research, he was given the wrong info by Bilstien, which they then changed after he purchased them. He has proof. Bilstein falsley advertised that the gen2 struts worked for the gen 3, which is NOT the case since they not only changed that info after the fact, AND used it as a basis for denying his warranty claim. Its their responsibility to make it right.

I put my bilsteins on my 09 at 15,000 miles set at 1.75.still working great at 247,000.one of the rear ones did leak though after quite a while.

 

When the 2016 went out the 2015- (070) p/n were the one listed by Bilstein until they decided to upgrade for a specific model. You can actually drop a 3rd gen suspension with a 2nd gen strut on the lower notch because 3rd are running 1" higher than 2nd gen. That is why the Bilstein third gen is listed +2" instead of +2.5" lift. Also, because 3rd gen have higher spring rate than 2nd they might have change the valving a bit but maybe not really. My opinion is they just shift grooves position a bit on the body.

OP, your 2nd gen shock failed because there was a problem with it, probably a defective seal, not because you used in on a third gen. It just make sense they decided to replace it under warranty.

True, it was a defective shock. However, the problem was that they originally were NOT going to replace it under warranty because it was installed on a 3rd gen. It took a lot of effort to get them to change their stance.

 

By the way, how much sag did you experienced on your 885 since the installation?
