What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Got the rear shocks mounted onto the truck. It's a slow process but we are getting there. Tomorrow I have to manage to put the bed and bedsides on by myself thankfully i can get it most of the way there with the forklift

 

Looks good!. I wish I had the time and money to do shit like that.

 

Ordered my lift kit, new LBJs, UCAs, and wheels. Then, of course, a new issue develops that I need to troubleshoot.

Weld job requirements on JBA Header
Had to cut cat 1 and weld the Y pipe on. Because of the shape of the JBA Y pipe, there was a lot of space to fill to get a seal.

Install complete !

 

Thanks slowly but surely building the truck more and more.

 

Probably should have done it before doing all the welding but lifted the truck up and put it in first the drivers side tire is wobbling so hopefully it's just the axle shaft that's bent. Looks like I'll be hitting the junkyard again.

 

Figured out how to fit my bike fork mounts without mounting to the top of the box, while keeping the tailgate up...



I can even just prop the back wheel atop the tailgate, come to think. QR mounts arrive Tuesday, I will get some 1x1 angle and twistnuts to fabricate the mounting plates today.

 

The extra width from the Tundra axle really opens up the ease of mounting shocks outside the frame on a 1st gen.

 

Yes it does I'm happy with the way it turned out. But just lifted the truck and put it into gear the drivers side tire is wobbling so hopefully it's just the shaft and not the housing or back to step 1 I go. On my way to pick your part now to grab a new axle shaft and see if that fixes the wobble.

Installed new plugs. All 4 that I removed were gapped at .065. Had to double check as I couldn't believe it. She runs way better, and I'm happy to say, no oil leakage from the valve cover gasket.

 

My driver door window seemed like it rattled when the window was down, so I
searched on here and tightened this bolt, it was loose and I think the rattle
is gone...

Yeah, that bolt holds the bottom section of the window frame. See a lot of people on here saying their's came loose. I took a few pics at salvage yard for someone else to show them what they tightened. Scroll to bottom of thread.

Finally got all of this done:

• Upper and lower ball joints
• Upper and lower control arm bushings
• Steering rack bushings
• Intermediate steering shaft
• Outer tie rods
• OME 881s and nitrochargers up front
• Dakar CS046RA/RB leafs and nitrochargers in back
• Carrier bearing

Took significantly longer than I thought it would, but it was my first time doing any of it. Took off Monday 4/25 to get it done over the long weekend, didn't finish up until last night around 2am. All in all I think it took something like 60 hours?

Only bummer now is I think my double cardan joint is totally boned. Sounds like a coke can rattling and pinging under the truck while I'm driving. It was sticking pretty good when I first pulled it out (phrasing). I pumped some moly grease through it and it got a little better, but it still really doesn't like accelerating or slowing down. Gonna keep pumping a ton of grease through it over the next few weeks and hope it clears up. It isn't a surprise though. There's been some pretty awful squeaking and creaking off the drive line for a while now, I just figured it was the u joints and bought new ones to replace them.

Anyway, front end is nice and tight now, no shimmies or vibrations while braking or driving down the freeway. Greasing the slip yoke took care of some bindings I was having as well. Suspension is a massive upgrade over some monroe quick struts I put in 6 years ago, and the tires stopped rubbing in the wheel wells. All in all, really happy with it. Just hoping the drive shaft doesn't explode when I drive home later.
