If it comes to life and sells, maybe toyota will bring back the regular cab and people can be happy again

Start at the end of this one and go back about 25 pages if you really want to get a sense. Read the first page as it'll tell you what's involved and then jump to the last 25 pages.

On the rare occasion where I do have to scoot, it does surprise me the amount of acceleration under the hood. You have to put your foot in it pretty far to get it, but it's there.

I don't buy vehicles to last more than three or four years, sometimes less, At 4-5K miles a year, I am not worried about longevity.

I have not seen any evidence a turbo is the weakest link in an engine. Everyone is scared of turbos. They turned a 4 banger into a V6 with less weight and fewer moving parts, German Engineering helped

Tacoma still using drum brakes......"oh but they are more reliable"

The Ridgeline is worse, but not by much. I owned a first-gen for 13 years and loved it, but even I can admit to riding ugly.

It’s not the turbo it’s the strain it puts on the engine itself. Yes you can drive a turbo engine without boost and it’s not hard on it that means you driving a overly technical 4cyl. But if you are using the Turbo then yes you are putting more strain on an engine. If you only keep vehicles for just as long as your warranty’s then all good you won’t have to worry about anything. I and a lot of people on this TACOMA forum plan to keep there vehicle for years and years to come why we learn towards a N/A vehicle and a Toyota. I would be a much bigger fan of the ranger if it had a v6. But saying a turbo turns a 4cyl into a 6cyl is nonsense lol! I’m sorry but not true at all that’s like saying putting a bottle of nitrous on a 4cyl makes it into a 6cyl because it has less parts! You have your opinion and I have mine, does not make your vehicle any less awesome to you. All I and others are saying is your trying to convince people on a Tacoma forum that a ranger is superior to a Tacoma. It has never been in the past and highly unlikely it will be now.

I’ve never had an issue with drum brakes ever but there’s been plenty of warped disc rotors…

I did 4,000 miles in the first month I had my truck. I’m over 83,000 miles in just under 2 years of ownership of my 2017 Tacoma. If I was doing 4,000 a year it’d be real hard to justify a new vehicle, especially every few years.

I think that if you’re not worried about reliability, then you’re missing a big chunk of Toyota’s appeal and the reason they can charge a premium for seemingly lackluster products.

I completely agree with the spirit of your earlier posts where you say Toyota is resting on its laurels and not innovating. I have a laundry list of things on my Tacoma that made my eyes roll way way into the back of my head (entune... come on...).

But when push came to shove and it came time to replace my 13-year-old truck (which was still running great, I just wanted something new), I optimized for a worry-free brand over one that was offering more bells and whistles, hence Toyota was almost immediately in the lead.

I’ll take iterative improvements and reliability over “innovative new features” that are unproven

It's not a Ranger to say. It's a new designed truck with the name Ranger. Nothing like the old ones, too bad. Is a Jeep Liberty a real Jeep actually ? It's just a name stuck on it to boost sales hopefully just like the Ranger.
Should have called them Changers. Would fit quite well imo.

You buy a new truck every 3-4 years or less and only drive 3K or less a year ?
    That's 50 miles a week. 7 miles a day !
I walk probably more a day than you drive.
And you expect us to value your experience and views ?:facepalm::facepalm:

German engineering ? Hillarious. How did that work out with Chrysler years ago ? Now replaced with Fiat. Thats why Mercedes depreciate 50% in 4 years and rank low in reliability.

Toyota isn't going to make it better, the transmission isn't going to learn and make it better.

The real problem is the throttle mapping as the truck is drive by wire. The only real way to improve that is OVTune.

That being said, if you push the pedal more, the truck will go. It just lacks the low rpm response that you are used to.

If the performance is that big of a deal to you, don't buy the truck. IF you think OVTune might be the answer, drive a truck with it first.

    Why are you still here?

I looked at the Ranger a couple of weeks ago at the car show. Ford should be ashamed to put to put their logo on it.

On the other hand, I was driving behind and next to a brand new black Raptor yesterday. That fucker looked bad ass. Better be for $70,000. Holy cow.

Pulled the trigger on a new Taco last month. Initially underwhelmed by performance but I'm adapting my driving style and its getting better. The engine makes adequate power but not until you get the revs up. The truck feels like a slug if driven conservatively and I think its largely due to engine management and transmission programming. My AT definitely feels better driven in S mode with ECT engaged using 89 or higher octane gas. I have just completely stopped using 6th gear and am still able to tweak 19.5-20 mpg highway at 75-80mph. Around town seldom dips below 19 mpg.

also why my buddies BMW had over $7500 in repairs in the year he owned it.

Theres also a reason why people trade them off once the factory warranty is up.

I thought the ranger might actually be competition.... until I actually saw it.
