It’s looking like there’s going to be plenty more to come, so I’ll continue adding with further developments.

One more trip back is in the works (on hold while Toyota reviews for possibly replacing) at this point (4/30/19) valve cover leak, pinch weld rust, fuel pump chirp, glass crack, wheel repair, show them electrical issues videos, PDR, some felt added in a few places for rattles.

I have an oil leak, Toyota has refused to repair it. Toyota Corporate came back to my dealer on 04/12/19 that they’re starting to see these trucks come up with this issue. There is no official TSB yet. Toyota Corporate informed the dealer that it’s “only seeping” and it is “normal” for the engine.

At least my service manager let me know he disagrees and has never heard a reply that ridiculous, he let me know he took additional photos, submitting a report after he traces the dye.

I can’t believe this. TOYOTA’S STANCE (not the dealer from what I was told) IS THAT THIS ENGINE LOSING OIL (not out the drain plug after drain plug removal) IS NORMAL.

A LEAKING TIMING CHAIN COVER IS “NORMAL”.

Toyota Corporate has refused to fix it.

This trucks first reported valid warranty issue was the same day I bought my truck. This service visit currently was to address braking shudder/washboard issue but I noticed the oil leak the day before I brought it to the dealer while I was changing the oil.

Truck has been in the shop now non-consecutively for 51 days and counting (31 days on this visit alone). All items beside oil leak had been reported before 2years/36,000 miles.

I am at month 31 of ownership and purchased it new after test driving it at 5 miles on the ODO.

Other items documented and worked on so far:

• Bed assembly issue that required dismantle/fix/paint. (Assembly issue)

• Hood re-glue. (Assembly issue).

• Differential Howl (New leafs). Call Friday service manager said it’s returned and will only get worse so x2 attempts. This was not planned for this visit but they’re trying for a fix. (TSB applied once, issue has returned)

• 30-10mph shudder, which evolved to a washboard. (2 TSBs, both do not apply due to differential/model, or drivetrain configuration/manual transmission).

• Timing chain cover seal replaced.

• Replaced radiator

• Replaced water pump

• Replaced carrier bearing

• Replaced rear wheel bearings

• HVAC blower motor/cage recall. (Recall)

• Replaced leaf springs

• Added body-mount dampeners


Not yet addressed/denied/other so far:

• Fuel pump chirp (I can hear it echo of houses and vehicles I drive by in my neighborhood. Echos if you park parallel to the garage door/box truck, it’s loud. They “could not replicate”. I have videos. (TSB available/not implemented)

• Passenger window gaskets cut too short and pop out (documented before 36k, states “customer pushed them back in/no action”. Documented that now warranty is up that they are indeed trimmed too short but extended warranty doesn’t cover trim/seals. (Assembly issue)

• Electrical gremlin that causes the headlights to dim intermittently, cabin blower to lose power, center screen/digital speedo to brighten in a flashing manner while braking and/or rpms drop through 1000rpm. They’ve documented battery is good and alternator is 13.9 at idle, no further action. I have videos of the behavior. (Unknown)

• Headlight housings pitting on inside of housing severely/abnormally. Dealer acknowledges but housings are not covered under extended warranty. (Materials failure).

• Passenger A-Pillar rattle. Cooler/cold days it sounds like a bb in a film container shaking around. (Assembly issue, no TSB, dealer could not replicate).

• Steering wheel cover buzzes frequently upon acceleration. I have a folded up gum box stuff in it to stop. (Dealer could not replicate, gum box not installed during dealer inspection/road test).

• Whistling from lower control arms, repaired myself with plugs from HomeDepot, drilled drain holes in aftermarket plugs. (There is a TSB but I DIY addressed mine before it came out.)

• Rust forming under paint on pinchwelds located on driver bedside, front, between cab underneath vertical rubber gasket. (Dealership has asked me to point this out next time I’m in shop).

These issues span assembly/manufacturing/service, while affecting areas of drivetrain, suspension, body, engine, HVAC system, and electrical system.

Doesn’t seem to align their 3 brand promise points they make in a Tacoma promotional video on their YouTube account:

"Some 2005 – 2008 model year Tacoma vehicles with 1GR–FE engines may display evidence of a
small oil leak located where the Bank 1 cylinder head, engine block, and timing cover meet. Use the
following repair procedure to address this condition

This repair is covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 60
months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date."

I call bs. Call back and tell them about this TSB on older ones and ask why not now !
Imagine what that shit will look like 100K from now.

 

That is awful to have to live with.....I keep saying Toyota is not the company they were even 10 years ago. They're starting to act like everybody else when it comes to a problem.

The worst thing you can hear from a dealer is "they all do it" as I did on my 2016 Tacoma. What they are really saying is "We are aware of the issue but will not do anything about it".

Very unlike Toyota in the past. I still like the Tacoma but I can't support a Toyota that keeps putting out mediocre upgrades not to mention warranty denials.

I had three great Tacomas. Then I bought the 2016. Hang in there. I just couldn't. That's not to say I will never buy a Tacoma again. Toyota is going to have to really step up to get my 40 Grand in the future.

That looks like crap, the dealer should fix it, maybe their stalling so the extended warranty company pays for it....

 

If toyota won't maybe your dealer will step up and cover it.

Wow I would think Toyota wouldnt deny this claim. That's ridiculous I'd keep calling corporate and speak to higher up or someone up there. That's bullshit!

Yeah.....for sure.......I really miss those good ol’ days when the trucks were delivered with frames destined to crumble into rust, and don’t forget those awesome 3.0L engines they put in the Runners where you might as well add coolant to the oil and oil to the coolant because the head gaskets already leaked like a sieve as they rolled off the production line in Japan.

Heck.....take me back to my 1972 Celica where the spot welds failed on the unibody shock towers and the shocks collapsed into my engine compartment!

The good old days of Toyota!

The only truly bulletproof vehicles Toyota ever made were 90s Camrys and Corollas. The rest is as spotty as it’s ever been......which is still better than the rest of the makers.

 

Get legal involve and bring them to court.

 

You do know that the frame issue now extends to the 17's right?

 

The last time someone told me leaks are fine is when I flew in a CH46 navy helicopter. "If the hydraulics are not leaking then we have a problem, he he he he." I then gave my pilot buddy that wtf look.

 

what is your dealership estimate to fix said issue ?
