I've been doing some research as I begin the path to putting 285s on my 2017 OR Tacoma.

This will be my first modification to my truck and instead of sticking with 265s I want to up the tire size. I am hoping that I can get some tips as to what all I need to do to "clear" the 285s. I am already planning on doing the CMC.

Everything on the truck is stock, so what I was wondering is without having any type of lift on my truck will those tires fit without a lift? I have also read about hammering down a pinch weld? Pretty new to the Tacoma scene and modifications so hoping I can get some tips as to what I should do to make sure things go smoothly with the new wheels&tires.

Planning on new rims (unsure of brand) but hoping to go 285/70?R16. Thanks for any tips TW!

    Let the mod ventures begin!

3 inch lift, 285/75R16 tires, and wheels with a 4 to 4.5 inch backspace should be good enough to drive around. Might need a cmc and a little heat gun action on the inner fender for moderate off-roading

You’ll have to at bare minimum put a leveling kit and then you’ll still need to heat gun fender liners. You’d be better off lifting 2.5” before cutting and remolding things.

I am planning on the CMC hopefully within the next week. As for a lift, the overall plan is to go full LT but that comes with time and $$$. For the mean time I am thinking the Total Chaos kit that retains the stock width of the truck or I have seen a lot of people running the Icon suspension setup.

If you plan/will go LT in the future, I would recommend that you just save your money for the LT kit and drive the truck stock until you have enough funds. That way you are not wasting money doing a mid travel set up just to eventually tear it off.

Useful to actually measure things up front. There are several specs to consider including the camber and actual inflation diameter under load while turning in accents and decent.

Once you see your standing clearances you can determine coil over height and calculate your arc clearance. You may decide on a lift at that point, so that becomes another part of the decision.

Then do the same for offset.

Some vociferous guys will make the argument to “just lift it such and such” inches. I’d venture they like to chop and melt. I prefer to melt as it is easier. I also settled for 70s as the .45” radius difference was huge in fitment simplicity.

My build thread has some pics and details on the approach I took with my 17 OR, but it does have a high quality, highly adjustable lift with conservative settings and just minor heat gun work.

That was my thinking too, just hard to push the thoughts of something that will allow a little more "fun" now with the mid travel. I think if I can skate by with doing a lift and some bigger tires and making any mods needed whether it be a CMC and anything else, that may satisfy my needs for wanting to do more. I spend most of my time in the Anza Borrego / Ocotillo Wells area and the 395.

If you plan on the long travel thing, I would look into the marlin crawlers LT setup. Supposedly it allows you to run 35s without CMC, lift, hammering, etc.

Thanks for all the tips guys!

I have totally changed my plans in a matter of a week or so. I have chosen to go with ICON for suspension (stage 5 up front & the RXT stage 9 in the rear). The KM3s are pretty much a lock for me and still deciding on a wheel choice. Hoping to get the hammer hangers from @ARCHIVE following that with some sliders, possibly @Mobtown Offroad

I was considering 35s for a minute but I think I'll see those later down the road

I was worried about needing the CMC done so had it done when the lift was installed. I went with the GTS kit from Dobinsons. Stuck 285/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers on 17" 0 offset Level 8 rims under there and it did not rub a bit. More than likely could have gotten away without the CMC but I hate going back over things twice.

I just figured since I have the access to all the fabricating tools and I am already going to be in there with the ICON setup why not do the CMC and get it out of the way. Much like you I don't want to go over things twice.

285/70/17 2.5" front 1.5" rear and uca's with caster pushed all the way forward. I only rub on the inside bottom corner of my flares in full lock/reverse. Need to trim about 1/2" out of the flare inside the fender well and I'll be good.

I run 285/70R16 Nitto Trail Grapplers on a 1.75" front level via Bilstein 5100s, stock rear end, on my 2nd gen and just had to trim some plastic because of my -12 offset wheels. 3rd gens may be even easier to fit these on too, I don't know.

If you want some sort of lift for the time being I'd do 5100s at the highest setting with a rear add a leaf. That's about your cheapest decent lift to get you by until you're ready to go LT. Just do the install yourself and it'll be around $450-500.IMG_20190509_163312.jpg
