BAFX interface question

I recently bought an OBD2 bluetooth adapter....this one:

I'm wondering if anyone has had any trouble with it draining the battery when you left it plugged in. Should I unplug it every time I get out of the truck? I'm sure the manufacturer recommends doing so, but looking for more real life advice.

Also, second semi-related question...anyone know if there's a custom PID for engine oil temperature for our trucks? 2015 Sport, in my case, if it matters.

@jproffer I got the same truck. I read the product info, but it says they have no database on which trucks work with it regarding reading TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMP. I need to check my trans fluid level at the correct temp.

Do you know if you can read your trans temp in real time with this?

 

Yes you can....well I think anyway. I'm getting numbers returned to me...they look reasonable..130-140 degrees range.

After the fact, as I was setting up my gauges, I changed the short name of both, but I don't think it matters. Originally I used the ttemp1 and ttemp2, but then changed them to Trans Pan and Trans TC.

 

What app are you using?

 

I'm using Torque Pro. So far not bad fr $5 but I have just barely gotten into it.

 

If you start on a cold morning would it show it warming up .. live readings?

 

Cool, that's what I was going to suggest I never found a PID for engine oil temp though.

Sounds like our trucks just have a "go-no go" so to speak...either the idiot light is on or it's not. And no temperature available.

 

Just got it and Iit probably won't be cold here again for several months (I hope lol) . But the temperature changes about every 3-5 seconds seems like, so that seems to indicate a "live" status.

I can tell you for sure, it's an idiot light lol! I think it comes on at 2psi. If your worried about an oil pressure problem, open the oil fill plug and look in while running. If you see a steady spray of oil your probably OK. If you see a glug glug drizzle, your not. Other tell tail sign is oil pump noise. If you hear a 'diesel' truck deep constant rumble from front of engine, that's the oil pump gear knocking. Other than that, 1GR-FE engineers kinda screwed us in this area, lol!

I'm also wondering about using that temp for the tranny fluid service...I.E.-how close to actual temp is it? And how close does it really need to be to get a good fluid level at spill-out? +/-5 degrees?....10?....1? Haven't done the math on how much of a difference 5 or 10 degrees would make in the fluid volume (and TBH, I probably WONT do the math lol)...but I still wonder if what that PID puts out is close enough.

 

LOL, yea. I'm not necessarily worried about oil pressure or temp, just something that I'd add to it if it was there. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I assume since the pan is attached to the block, and the pump is in the pan (in other words, no external oil lines to tap into) there's no where to put a pressure/temp sensor even if a person wanted to...but like I said, I'm no mechanic, so I could be wrong.

 

2 PSI haha....holy shit. Sounds like ya better be quick on the keys and the shifter to neutral and roll off the road if you want to save the engine at that point. They could give us a LITTLE more leway, but maybe they couldn't...I don't know the "normal" pressure.

 

For trans fluid temp when changing, adding, checking level I use the app as a guide, but I still do it the old fashion way.

 

Normal, at running temp, at idle is about 10-12psi. These engines are great engines and tuned to the hilt from the factory, but leave little margin for error, lol!

Very, very, very, very, very reliable, but one small variation can cascade pretty quick.


For sure, if you see oil pressure light come on, kill the ignition, coast, get a tow. Figure it out when your back at the shop!

 

Check the thread below. The part about jumping the 4 and 13 pin on the OBD, shift cycle, and waiting for indicator light to indicate it's at correct temp to check.

Dont you think the temp you get from your gizmo would be the same that triggers the indicator light?

I think, have to look it up, the OEM sensor flashes for trans fluid temp in a ten degree range. Not sure if it's +/- 5 degrees from optimal, OR if it's +10 degrees where the temp is too high.

Kinda what I was saying. I use readings as a guide. But when adding/changing/checking/etc fluid do it the old fashion way.
