So will a 2001-2004 mirror switch fit in the 1997 armrest or do I you need to get a 1997 mirror switch and make the 2004 mirror wires work for the 1997 mirror switch?
I have 2004 mirrors and need to figure what switch will work and fit in the armrest control.

Yes, it will fit. There is no issue getting 2001-2004 power mirrors working with earlier harnesses.

So the 2004 mirror switch is the same size as the 1997 switch for fitting in the arm rest?

Exactly the same. In fact that mirror switch is used on a bunch of different Toyota vehicles since the early 2000's. I'm running a 2002 Toyota Sienna switch.

You'd have to buy the repair terminals and the connectors from Toyota. Probably run you $20 a side.

So they sell them separately and not part of the mirrors or harness?

You cut off the wiring and connector that comes off the mirror, right?

Toyota sells something called repair terminals intended for use when a wiring harness is damaged. A terminal crimped to a 4 or 5 inch pigtail is sold for about $5-10 depending on the terminal. The connector housings are sold by themselves. That'll run probably $20-30 per side for 2 repair pigtails and a connector.

If there is still some wiring left (few inches) on the mirror, I can just replace them with Molex connectors for you. It'll be cheaper.

dents and missing bits, built in the Gravel garage, hillbilly trained mechanic…
So I just scored a set of 2000 4Runner heated power mirrors, Now to truck down the rest of the bits to install them in my 98 Ext cab Tacoma.
Any ideas on what year to look for switch and harness wise?

Just make the harness yourself, it’s only 8 different wires. It’s actually harder to use the OEM harness unless you install power windows and locks too, you’d have to meticulously dissect and remove only the wires for the mirror.

Heating pads will have two extra wires per mirror. Hook it up to a timer relay and momentary switch, or just wire it in parallel with the defroster circuit for your windshield as it is stock on 4Runners.

It came from a 2003 Prius 183574 7 pins. I got the left up and left side working also the right up and the left side working cannot get the other side and down working. Have 3 wires coming from each mirror brown, red, and black. I have the brown and black connected which works fine, the 2 red wires I ground to make them work. I have one wire to power and one for ground white/black. I have one wire left has no power on any part of the switch? Help! Thanks

I just installed power mirrors using this exact switch.

Here is my post on the details of the wiring

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...th-a-01-04-mirror.172052/page-5#post-30225643

I bought these TRQ units from Amazon

    https://amzn.to/3A6E29R

I have bought other TRQ parts and they have been decent quality. I'll be sure to let y'all know if these vibrate at highway speeds and they will get returned to Amazon. These mirrors have Red, Brown and Black wires. The RED wire is the common wire for these mirrors

The switch I got was the Camry switch that looks like this one. It has 10 pins.

I just finished confirming the switch and mirror wires for my mirror and switch combo and here is the pinout:

    Left Mirror:
    Red to Pin 6
    Brown to Pin 5
    Black to Pin 1

    Right Mirror:
    Red to Pin 6
    Brown to Pin 8
    Black to Pin 7

    Pin 10 = Ground
    Pin 9 = Accessory Switched +12V

I used this three conductor 16gauge wire for my mirror runs to the switch:

    https://amzn.to/3UtTKml

Due to the structure under the shifter console the Switch had to be mounted at an angle to clear the structure underneath. I have manual windows so I do not have the armrest pod with power window switches and a slot for the mirror switch.

    Mike

I'd encourage you to do both if you can swing it in the budget. Also, consider replacing any weak door check while you have the door card off wiring the mirror.

    Good Luck
