Oil Change... is really a short question.

I was searching... but I did not find it, I know it is somewhere, but here is my question. How can I avoid an oil drop mess when removing the oil filter?

a.- Wait a long period of time prior to hand loosen the oil filter and after engine is off.

b.- Is there any other way than waiting? Which one?

Last time I remember that Janster answer that, but as I mentioned... I can not find it.

All I do is wedge an empty 20oz soda or water bottle under the oil filter spill collector and remove the rubber plug. I don't think you can avoid spillage by loosening and/or waiting.

My oil and filter changes take 10 minutes total.

 

yeah i used a coke can to catch the oil from the filter.

 

1. take oil filter drain cap off
2. put a sall container under it (I use a 20 oz gatorade with a metal coa hanger taped to it.)
3. Unscrew oil filter.
4. once filter is fully drained replace plug. Done and clean! be careful tho, its usually very hot by the plug if you just drove the truck.

 

What is an oil filter drain cap? I don't have one on my truck, is it only on the V-6 engines? My 4 cyl doesn't have one, and it makes quite a mess when removing the filter.

 

On the 4.0 v6 the oil filter is mounted upside down at the top of the moter so when you start to unscrew it it emediately starts to poor. and if you didn't take the steps these guys are talking about you would have oil all down the front of the motor.

 

The good thing about the oil cap is that is not longer there, on my first oil change (this is my second) I installed a fumoto valve, this time (than oil in the pan) will be as easy as open a valve (prior I will insert a proper width hose), but I do remember the oil filter mess.
