96 v6 Tacoma rattle or tick

Hello, first I am very new at this… And technically challenged… Or technically stubborn!… My 96 Tacoma V6 with 160,000 K… Just came up with a rattle or tick …… Just recently I replaced the starter… And being in the country I was short of oil added 1 quart of Subaru synthetic oil… From the cab it sounds like a heatshield rattling under the hood it sounds like a rod coming out… It does not do it when I first started up cold once it warms up it starts making the noise… I’ve read many threads and then go back to the truck just confusing myself more… Hope someone can help… I am hope I’m not beating a dead horse… Thank you in advance

 

It could just be the heat shield on the passenger side exhaust which tends to crack over time.

Get a large vacuum hose and chase it down

 

It helps if you can post a video. Here's a thread below with a video about the before and after the project from member @unixadm. Mine makes a loud tapping noise at idle when it's warmed up. Not so much when cold.

I'm in the process of getting a replacement engine ready for installation next month.

I had to inspect and rule out, valve lash adjustment, main bearings, and heat shields before I decided to replace the engine. Mine actually makes more noise than the engine in this video. Multiple mechanics (including Toyota) have examined mine and could not make a call on the noise source. Based on the parts that I have seen replaced on that engine by the previous owner, I suspect it ran hot at some point and possibly low on oil.

Speaking of heat shields, make sure yours is in excellent condition the one behind the engine
on the fire wall. I noticed mine has a rip in mine last month and wish I had replaced it when the engine was out.

Trying to post a picture. PhotoBucket is down "again" this morning.

 

Just inspect it really closely for cracks etc. once the engine is back in it’s almost impossible to replace it because of space issues and access to those strange type clips.

 

Oh oh oh.. Its the one on the firewall with the foil and insulation. and not the crossover pipe? Those are strange looking clips.

 

Yea, correct, the foam or fiberglass collapsed around two of my clips and pushed out an inch or so,

So I got a can of expanding glue and used a 2x2 piece of wood to push the heat shield back in place while the glue dried over night
