Only way now to do it is to tap into the drivers side smart handle, which just gives you a second antenna for the drivers side. If you don’t set the doors to all unlock you would only unlock the drivers side door reguardless of which handle you touched.

The smart key computer is the same computer used in the Highlander which does have drivers and passengers handles. The pins in the computer used in the Highlander are unpopulated in the Tacoma. I originally started by getting the pins and wiring up to the passenger inputs, but this didn’t work. While the computer is the same, and it is easy to wire the computer the same, but unfortunately the Tacoma isn’t programmed the same. Unfortunately the ability to program the computer to work with the passenger handle isn’t available in Techstream either.

The 2020s will have the passenger smart handle from the factory, which may open up the ability for us to wire up the ecu for the passenger handle, and program our systems as if they were a 2020. If it is anything like when the 2016s were released I wont expect this to be available to any of us to tinker with for quite some time after the 2020s are released, unless maybe you are very friendly with the dealership mechanics - I am not.

We may be able to get this to work at some point in the future, but for now the only way to do this is still just to allow all 4 doors to unlock with the drivers door.

I didn’t understand at first what you meant previously. But I do now. You are right, this is another option that requires a small amount of additional wiring.
You would still have both the drivers door and passenger door unlock at the same time, but the rear passenger doors would be unaffected.
This is not something I will be doing myself as even if I had factory passenger door smart handle I would have it set for 4 doors to unlock at once as that is what works best for me.
I would still prefer the passenger door worked independently as the factory intended on vehicles equipped that way, so I’ll pursue this again once we can get a version of techstream updated for the 2020s, but good thinking with the option to tie only driver and passenger together.

Holy crap! Why didn't I see this a long time ago? I have been formulating this very modification in my mind for almost two years. I never actually took the leap to do it because I was never sure if the antenna was built into the handle or the door. I can't thank you enough for figuring this out. It has been one of my hugest pet peeves with this truck. I think with this addition, all my gripes about the truck have been solved.

It would take an additional relay in the BECU plus whatever programming update to have system distinguish between driver's and passenger's door ( maybe a code signal from each side)

Nice find, have you received these and installed yet? Are they the correct size? Part number differs though first half is the same. If these are confirmed to work I’ll add your eBay link to the first post.

I ordered last night after I got off work. I will update soon. I believe it’s the same. I’m hoping the variations in that second number are just colors. Connector should be common since it goes into the same ecu plug

Is there a plug and play option instead of tapping wires?

Perhaps the harness from the 2020 models may be an option. (?)

We don’t believe so, you can currently populate the pins in the ECU that the 2020s will use, however they will not function. The ECU will need to be re programmed for that to work, which of course would reprogram your keys as well, at this point in time the only way we see to accomplish this will be via tapping the drivers door wires. If you can source the correct female harness that would mate with the male connector you are purchasing (you would then need twice as many connectors and pins as you currently need) you could make a plug in harness between the drivers door handle and wiring with wires that will lead to the passenger door, however the function would be the same as tapping the drivers door wiring.

As Victory says above, just to reiterate
Based on my work with the 4wd ECU...
The fact that the 2020 gets multiple handles natively will likely do nothing for us...
I will almost guarantee security ECU didnt change for 2020. To make the passenger pins active, a change is made by Toyota to the year/vehicle model specific ECU, which then tells the 4wd ECU, Security ECU, etc which options to turn off and on.

For example, the same 4wd ECU is installed in 2wd (with rear locker) and 4wd vehicles (with and without locker). Main ECU tells that 4wd ECU what vehicle it is installed in, and what options to turn off and on (like locker anytime vs 4lo only).

You can install the new 2020 Security ECU in your (2016-2019) truck, and I will
almost guarantee that it will revert to only the drivers door pins being active.

(Not 100% positive, as I have not been able to find the 2020 ECU PN yet, but it is almost guaranteed based on how the other ECUs work)

Note, only way around this that i know of would likely be modifying the main ECU software, (such as Ovtune) to change the operation modes of the security ECU, or 4wd ECU, and good luck with that.

Got the ebay goods. Waiting on my connector to ensure fitment but they look good and the pair was 8 bucks shipped.
