Then again, I was too busy trying to figure out what all the damn beeping was about.

10" of water is not going to do it. Intake is in the wheel well. I would bet you can easily double that and not have issues if you drive smart. And filling the oil isn't the issue. It appears that oil is pooling in the engine and getting sucked in via the PCV or through the valve guide seals when on a steep incline (and especially with throttle). There also could be a pickup issue in the pan that is exacerbated by the lower pan volume due to slow oil return. That is all guesswork until we can get more info. If the same, likely rear side, plug(s) is fouled across multiple instances, then it would appear to be valve guide seals causing the smoke.

Just a note that you will permanently lose your turn signal sound also.

I travel through deeper water than that 2 months out of the year, never a problem. Even when I actually thought “oh shit this is going to be a problem” the Tacoma didn’t even notice.

I have never had a smoking engine.

This guy sucks at being off the established roads. I think it’s entirely possible he THINKS he’s the guy who knows what he is doing, but he’s actually the guy who fails and then creates a website.

Not my first Toyota (currently have a 1995 land cruiser, the taco and a 2018 t4r) Not my first time on the various Toyota forums....and not the first time I've seen this topic come up - even on every one's favorite TRUCK (lol) motor - the 4.0L. There was a doozy a couple years back on another forum about a second gen pouring white smoke while on an incline....I'm too lazy to go look it up.

As a side note I love all this bullshit about it being a 3rd gen problem, or a problem because (dear God) the 3.5 is a CAR engine. It's these little things that makes this place so fucking precious.....

Front and rear license plates say "FREEMAN", license plate frame says "Freeman Toyota" which is just north of San Fransico in Santa Rosa. So is he driving around w/o plates?
Seems this guy is blowing-smoke from somewhere other than his exhaust pipe.

Also regarding expert level decision making skills- 3 month long overlanding trip with teh baby.

NOTHING (literally nothing) makes a sketchy off road situation in the deep wilderness better than having a damn baby. So. Many. Times. When I’ve looked at my water rations, the temperature/weather, the distance from civilization, amount of fuel on board...so many, many times I’ve wished “damn if only I had a freakin baby to make things way more high stakes...if only...”

This guy may be an idiot, but I don't see anything to make me believe he's a liar. Tacomas are marketed pretty hard in a way that goes to the fringe of the truth. Only a small minority of owners really test the limits of these trucks. The others just tell their neighbors at the neighborhood BBQ how awesome their truck is if they were to take it off road. Driving off road should not be a reason that toyota will deny a warranty claim. This forum is full of toyota fan boys and apologists. I think its probably hard to get a real sense of what the problems really are on this forum. Then there's the other 95% of tacoma owners who never post here no matter what their tacoma experience is, good or bad. In this story, I see a dude who believed toyota marketing and the truck failed. Don't know if his truck represents all tacomas or if it is somehow an outlying lemon...
My research has indicated to me that tacomas are not great trucks, they're just a mediocre truck that happens to be better than all the other trucks sold by other manufacturers.

There's probably truth in his story. People don't generally speak badly of their own decisions and purchases, they do the opposite as a general rule.

The whole burning-oil on a steep incline issue - its the customer's responsibility to make sure the oil is always topped off to the fill line, especially before off-roading. That's why it makes sense to just change it right at 5000 miles vs extending to who-ever's 50 word oil analysis comment paragraph state's otherwise.

Typical Toyota dealership customer service issue otherwise - try a different dealer and escalate the issue up to the regional rep.

The oil issue is well know, and yes those people had proper fills and levels. Not the driver, that’s straight up Toyota

I don't understand the first 1/3 of that guys website. Complaining about fording depths but then goes on about how it was not even an issue. Admits that it was from over revving while the truck was oil starved on a hill. I guess without that part of the website, his complaint would be a paragraph long about how he effed up.

I can attest that after Hurricane Harvey and driving around Houston, TX afterwards, the Tacoma goes through water just fine.
