The breather on the differential stock has a very short base with threads, almost like a hollow short bolt. It screws in to threads in the differential, but the threaded portion is too short to affix a hose clamp around to secure the tubing on it. The threaded portion is about half the width of the hose clamp (maybe 1/4" at most).

The new breather part in the write-ups here has a much longer base portion that slides securely into the tubing and makes for easy clamping. You could double clamp it if you wanted to.

Another FYI: The replacement breather is of the "always open" design, so make sure it's mounted in a relatively sheltered area. I just put it in the gas filler like the write-up says, but be sure to place far enough away that you have clearance to screw on the gas cap and don't bonk it when shoving pump nozzles in.

the transmission and trans axle on my 99 is a press in version and not to easy to do this mod to, that being said, they vent on top og my 5 speed gearbox, it's easy to do the front and rear diff, I did it in an afternoon, vented front to the top of the hood, rear to the top of my right rear tail light, very easy.

Thanks a bunch for the additional confirmation. The union part # ?? For the yellow 3/8" ID tube, does it matter which of the two that have been given, I use? I have written down 90404-51319, but the other one is mentioned often... 90404-51026?

It is for anyone with a breather on their rear differential who goes into 'deep' water. Since the bottom of a differential is about 9" from the ground, and the breather is on top of that differential, any water deeper than 18"-22" could get in there.

The 4WD Tacomas already have a factory installed breather on the front differential and ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect). Those tubes come up near the battery. Toyota not putting one on the rear diff (specially an Off Road TRD) is really short sighted and deserves a BOO!

ok so i went out and found the breathers...holy crap what a pain. the transfer case was a pain because it starts out on the passenger side and then runs over the top of the tranny to the drivers side and then runs to the middle of the tranny and stops jsut where it reaches the engine. the Transfer Breather is just laying back there between the fire wall and the engine....you really have to pull and tug to get it to be visible from the engine bay. i pulled down the lining in the wheel well and that helped. lots of slack and easy to move to higher ground. i would just use the same breather and extend the hose with a simple union.

as for the Manual Transmission breather, this is another story...it is all the way up just underneath where the fire wall starts. To see it through the wheel well lining or from the engine bay you need to move a bit of wiring that is laying over it hiding it from your view.

There is just one problem...It seems to be pressed in or something. from underneath the truck i was able to touch it and could not feel any squarish shape that i could fit a wrench or socket on. it just felt like it met the surface of the tranny and that was all that was there. it only sticks out as tall as the silver part of the union is.

Not sure if anyone can tell me something better about this. I'm hoping that it comes out!!!

I remember looking for the AT/etc breathers and noticing that they're high enough up already that if I get in water that deep, I'm fucked anyway, so I didn't bother relocating.

Are the two breathers in the engine bay front diff and t-case? If so what about the tranny?

Alright thanks for clarifying. If the breathers to the T-case and tranny are on top or higher than the top of them then they are high enough for my purposes. Thanks again.

well the tranny one, being on top of the Tranny is actually not that high and you wouldnt even have to have water over the top of your tires to reach it. unless you plan on crossing a creek you're fine though.

As for the Transfer Case you need to check that breather and make sure it is sitting up. it isnt really anchored to anything behind the engine so there is about a foot or more of slack there in which it could lay down off the side of the tranny.

Thanks for the heads up on the t-case breather. Yeah I don't like to go through any water higher than the bottom of the body so I should be good.
