Sounds like you have a capable rig. You're gonna weld on you LBJ's huh?

Yep. Two buddies and myself have had a total or partial failure in the last two months. All involved the bolts. The only way to totally prevent that from happening is to weld the LBJ to the spindle. We wheel hard enough that we are putting a ton of stress on the system often. That's causing the bolts to shear. Once it's welded I'll never have to worry about sheared bolts again. lol

Do you increase the likelihood of a ball joint failure running it this way? You would have to have back-up modded spindles.

It doesn't. The LBJ takes the same force regardless of if the bolts are there or if it's welded. My LBJ's are fairly new and play free so I'm not overly concerned with them failing. I wouldn't need modded spindles if they do fail. I'd need to carry a spare driver and passenger side spindle, LBJ's and 8 LBJ bolts. It's an hour field repair tops.

The only real downside to this is that instead of being able to pull the 4 LBJ bolts to replace a blown CV you'd have to pull the ball joint out of the LCA. I have RCA CV's so I don't expect them to break. Ever. lol

Yeah, the LBJ's take the same force, but you are putting higher loads with big tires and removing the weakest link (sheared bolts). I'm curious what the second weakest link might be...

    EDIT: hopefully none!

My buddies and I are always wondering what the next weak link is. Example. About 9 months ago I bit the bullet and went with RCV CV's. You'll see posts of mine where I was a huge proponent of having the weak link easy to replace, ie the CV. After replacing 10 of them I started to rethink my position. I was in contact with RCV when they where developing the 1st gen Taco/3rd Gen 4Runner CV's. I waited the better part of 6 months until they where finally ready. AFAIK I was the first 3rd Gen 4Runner to get them.

The big question was what's the next weak link? The pinion and ring are actually fairly strong. The stub shafts in the ADD system is not. I am sure that that will be the next failure point. The big question is can it stand the torque from hard wheeling. We all know the stock CV's can't. But, no one had ever run bullet proof CV's. With my RCV's I've wheeled them a ton. I haven't had to replace a CV in that 9 months. I've also never had any issues with the stub shaft. So, for now at least, it appears the stub shaft is strong enough. If that ever changes I've already talked to RCV about making a 4340 stub shaft. They will do it.

So this is just another test to see if a theory works. If it does I'm out nothing. If it doesn't I have to replace 2 spindles and 2 LBJ's. A few of us are looking into making the system strong enough for our needs but that will entail a lot of CAD and testing. In the meantime I'm just gonna keep wheeling and most likely breaking shit. lol

Amazing. Well to fill in the tires not selling gap I've got some 295/70r17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers for sale. Less then 5000 miles on them and 11 to 12/32nds left. I'll get some photos up sometime in the next month. Lol
