That thar trailer wheel don't look right to me. Rumor mill on the Colorado forums say 40mph and a 3' whoop, but who knows.

There's a lesson in this though... if you're running a heavy truck and/or towing a trailer, slow the eff down. Google "Bent Ute" and you'll see that the Aussies are still learning this over and over again.

There is a significant difference between the Tacoma guy manning up and admitting he screwed up vs the Chevy guy and his defamation of GM.

People seem to either forget or ignore the recommendation to downrate load ratings for off road use. And then go really fast because it smooths out the bumps. Still, I'd expect something else to break before the frame bent like that but obviously it was a hard enough hit that something was going to fail.

I wonder how the weight in the beds was distributed. Heaviest stuff forward of the axle would help counter toungue weight. It's always easiest to access if it's close to the tail gate but not the best for handling. Also have to wonder about weight distribution in the trailer, too much toungue weight could make this more likely. Need to know more though, speculating in the absence of facts is fun but not really helpful. If just going too fast were the only cause I'd expect it to happen more.

I've seen that. I don't know what they're referring to by dry weight, if you go to the trailer mfg site the dry weight is under 900lbs with a max weight of 3000lbs (likely limited by 3000lb axle)

Yeah. They have that number is wrong. I made the same mistake since that spec isn't included in the spec page.

"GM’s investigator took trailer to a certified CAT scale. Trailer is 2100lbs. Tongue weight is 347lbs." I imagine the truck hit the ground first after the 3' whoop. Then 2100lbs of airborne trailer @ 40+ mph coming down on the hitch driving the rear end into the dirt with the rear axle as the fulcrum.

Y'know, I had just gotten back from the hardware store with what I would need to install fuel cans on the tongue of my trailer. I think I'll be leaving them in the bed of the truck instead.

FWIW, the guy is posting actively on Expo and says he was only going about 25. He said the hit was enough that he stopped initially to check the trailer and didn't realize the damage done to the truck til he got out.

Well based on the fact that he ruined his own truck, do continued acts of stupidity surprise you much? Doesn’t seem to be the brightest.
